Okay, here's my problem. I had Bluetooth ActiveSync working, but I installed Nyditot's Virtual Display and lost the use of all my buttons (directional, power, scroll, etc). To fix that issue I had to do a hard reset of my Axim X5. After reinstalling my drivers for my Billionton Bluetooth CF, I can't initiate an ActiveSync connection from the Bluetooth Manager on the Axim. It is sucessfully paired and I can do Network Access and do File Sharing with no problems through the Bluetooth Manager. When I try activating the Bluetooth ActiveSync, it sucessfully connects to my notebook (Inspiron 8600 with built in Bluetooth), and the desktop ActiveSync 3.7.1 client acts like it's going to work and the green globe swirls for a while, but then errors out stating that it can't find a device to connect to. (BTW, I can sync via my USB cable and 802.11b card with no issues.)

Things I've tried:
1) Removing ActiveSync 3.7.1 from my notebook and reinstalling
2) Removing the Dell Bluetooth software from my notebook and reinstalling
3) Resetting the Axim X5 again and reinstalling the drivers

Some more information:
1) The notebook automatically assigns the ActiveSync Bluetooth Port to be COM6 (This was the setting before I had issues syncing)
2) The notebook also automatically assigns a Bluetooth Serial Port to be COM7 (This was the setting before I had issues syncing)
3) The default incoming port on the Axim is COM8 and the outgoing port is COM9 after installing the Bluetooth drivers

I don't know why the ActiveSync Desktop client won't see the Axim at all. I believe it's some issue on the Axim side, but I don't know why. It's driving me crazy. Any pointers or help would be greatly appreciated.

More info....

I've been troubleshooting this issue more and doing research online. I've read of others have the same problem but there are no real solutions except to follow some guides to try to make it work. But alas, I haven't found a solution that works for me yet.

I've diagnosed the problem further and the Axim does successfully negotiate a connection for ActiveSync on the computer, but the ActiveSync client is what is failing. I believe that ActiveSync 3.7.1 is the cause of this issue. Apparently, when I setup a new partnership after doing a hard reset of the Axim, ActiveSync 3.7.1 doesn't know how to talk to the virtual com port. My Bluetooth software on the computer is set to COM6 and ActiveSync 3.7.1 is set to use this port.

Take a look at the connections:

The connection between the AXIM and computer is successful. But ActiveSync 3.7.1 refuses to recognize the AXIM as a valid device.

The only work around I have for now is to connect via Bluetooth Network Access and then go into the ActiveSync on the Axim and press the sync button (This behaves as it would if I were to use my 802.11b card). I don't like this answer, I prefer just to use the "Activesync via Bluetooth" instead of piping the connection through TCP/IP (via Network Access).

So the question is how to make Microsoft ActiveSync 3.7.1 communicate successfully with the BT virtual serial port (COM6)?

Finally resolved, the issue is a bug in the WIDCOMM BT Manager software on the PocketPC setting up the connection wrong when you are using the Connection Wizard. If you choose Explore a Bluetooth device and then browse for services on the target Bluetooth device and choose ActiveSync connection the WIDCOMM BT Manager does not properly create the ActiveSync serial connection. You must create the connection in the wizard by choosing the service directly: "ActiveSync via Bluetooth" and then the target BT device to connect and then the BT serial port gets properly setup for ActiveSync. This is one really retarded bug in the BT Manager. I would say I've done 16 hours of troubleshooting on this issue to find out about this stupid bug.

The drivers I'm using are WIDCOMM based and version 1.4.1 Build 59. Another issue is that after the first Bluetooth ActiveSync attempt the ActiveSync 3.7.1 client no longer tries to communicate with the selected Bluetooth COM port whether or not you select OK or Cancel on the error message where it times out and cannot recognize the device. I had to reboot the computer to get ActiveSync 3.7.1 to work properly again (killing the WCESMgr.exe and wcescomm.exe processes and then relaunching ActiveSync 3.7.1 did not work).

Hopefully this helps others who are having issues using ActiveSync through Bluetooth.

Ooops. Wrong answer. Reading your topic again I see it's about the Wizard on the Pocket PC.
