I'm Stumped....

I've followed your guide to setting up the ICS (good guide btw.) and I'm getting connected to the BT Network Access... I can't seem to access the internet though??? IE doesn't find any URL's & MSN Messenger keeps connecting through Bluetooth dial up.

I've tried fiddling with the Connection settings (Work/Work/Work & setting proxy server etc.)

Any advice?

Much appreciated

Andy

PS. it's an Ipaq 3970

Sorry to hear your blue over your Bluetooth.

Let see if we can get you working.

For the iPAQ you would want work Settings/work Settings/work
Then in the center Work Setting, tap modify... and Proxy Settings.
The first box should be checked, This network connects to the internet.
The rest should be unchecked.

What you might try to do, is ping on your PC a site that you connect to.
C:\Documents and Settings\DA Hettel>ping msn.com

Pinging msn.com [207.68.172.246] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 207.68.172.246:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

Then enter this number 207.68.172.246 in Pocket Internet Explorer (PIE) and see if you can connect to msn. If you can then you have a problem with DNS, if you can't then you have a problem with Internet access. When I enter 207.68.172.246 I get http://207.68.172.246/ which is a page that has a link to to http://www.msn.com by the way.

David,

I've checked and the connection settings are exactly as you've suggested...

Tried Accessing http://207.68.172.246 from PIE, no luck... Nothing at all happens...
Tried signing in to MSN... pops up with "Unable to connect with current settings.........."

To me it seems as though the Internet app's don't even recognise that the bluetooth LAN Access is available??? Should there be an entry for the bluetooth network in the Network adapters section?

Still Blue ;-(

Many Thanks!!

Andy.

Hey, Randy...

Do you have a Personal Firewall activated? Try without it now, then set it to notify of programs trying to access the internet... You'll see the BT stact and another Windows process trying it.

Make sure the ICS didn't change your Gateway and DNS setup in your Network Adapter (desktop).

No, with the original BT stack in the H3970 there'll be no network adapter there. The only new adapter is the virtual one added to your desktop.

Freitasm,

Nope, no firewall active...

I've assigned the BT Adapter a static IP address. It's using my ADSL Router as it's D.G. and I've got my DNS's set to the same as my NIC's...

Randy, from your last post I take it that you have a 5455?

If that is correct, then I think I know what your problem is.

You need to set your Bluetooth PAN User Driver to Use server-assigned IP address, this way it will load correctly and work with the ICS network card on your PC.

You said you have "I've assigned the BT Adapter a static IP address. It's using my ADSL Router as it's D.G. and I've got my DNS's set to the same as my NIC's... "

This is what is messing you up. The Bluetooth PAN User Driver can only talk to the Bluetooth Network adapter in your PC. ICS will connect the Bluetooth network to your wavelan card.

If you're using ICS in your desktop, the Blutooth adapter has to be 192.168.0.1. Your Pocket PC has to to use server assigned IP.

The gateway can be your router or your computer.

OK...

So now I've set the IP address of the BT Network Adapter on the PC to be
192.168.0.1...
Mask: 255.255.255
DG: Router's IP...

The 3970's using server assigned IP...
Should I add the DNS server's IP's to the 3970's config? -Or the PC's???

Currently it's in both, but stil no WWW...

When I enter a URL, PIE thinks about it very briefly (the busy icon flashes for a millisecond) then nothing!!! Boohoo.....

On my 5455, the bluetooth PAN User Driver is set up with this:

IP Address 192.168.0.30
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1
Primary DNS 192.168.0.1
DHCP server 192.168.0.1

The Pc Bluetooth card is set up by sharing my 802.11b card
Which is set up with a 192.168.1.X address
The important thing here is that both of the cards are in different space and do not share address space.

Question, with my 3970, I never had a bluetooth card that would support a lan connection as a server on my PC. But my 3970 did not have a Bluetooth PAN Network card. Does your 3970 have such a card? Or what card are you entering this info into? I've upgraded my 3970 to the same stack as on my 5455, to make my life a little easier.

With a Win2k and free Zonealarm machine, the ZoneAlarm program needed to be tinkerd with to get a connection. In WinXP it seems to be some what easier to set up.

David,

My Ipaq 3970 has built in Bluetooth...

The LAN connection is working to some degree and I must be getting some sort of pass-thru happening as I'm able to sign into MSN Messenger from the 3970...

I'm thinking that I may have some sort of problem with PIE???

My PC is a W2K machine on a 192.168.1.x Subnet...

The BT Adapter on the PC has an address of:
IP - 192.168.0.1
SM - 255.255.255.0
D.G. 192.168.0.1
DNS1 192.168.0.1
DNS2 My ISP's DNS

On the 3970 ... Connections are set to :

Work Settings / Work Settings / Work...

On "Work Settings"
-- Proxy Settings, The "This network connects to the internet" is ticked.

With this config, MSN Messenger will sign in when BT LAN Access is enabled... but still no WWW...

Is there an update for PIE?

What SP# did you use to update your Ipaq 3970 to the 5455 ROM?

Cheers.

Andy, if you can connect to the MSN, then your internet connection is fine.

don't worry about the Connection settings, because they don't influence the original Bluetooth stack.

If you have been deleting files from your Pocket PC, try the following:

- Open the File Explorer
- Browse to the Windows folder
- Run the welcome.exe program from there
- Soft reset the iPAQ
- Connect and use the Pocket Internet Explorer

There are some configuration files that PIE uses, and if you remove then, PIE will simply show the spinning globe for a while, but not load anything!

My PC is a W2K machine on a 192.168.1.x Subnet...

The BT Adapter on the PC has an address of:
IP - 192.168.0.1
SM - 255.255.255.0
D.G. 192.168.0.1 <---- Blank
DNS1 192.168.0.1 <-----Blank
DNS2 My ISP's DNS <---Blank

On the 3970 ... Connections are set to :

Work Settings / Work Settings / Work... <---Good

On "Work Settings"
-- Proxy Settings, The "This network connects to the internet" is ticked. <---Good.

It looks like you are not sharing, your 192.168.1.x network, to me. If you where, and it was working correctly, all that you would see on the BT Adapter would be the IP address, and the Subnet. everything else is blank.

My 3970 has ROM 2.00.00 ENG and for Bluetooth Radio I have Module Type BC-01, Radio Revision 1.0 What I did was download this file : http://www.billionton.com.tw/extra/CFBTCE-N.zip
And unziped it on my PC and then ran it. This will install the updated widcomm drivers on an unupdated 3970, and maybe on a 3870. It would be a good idea to buy a billionton CF bluetooth card just to be legal if you like this, but you don't need it to see if it will work. At least it does on my US 3870. Let it install to the default directory (main Memory) You'll then have the 5455 bluetooth stack. I don't know if the new ROM update will break this, as I haven't done it on my 3970. I do know it will NOT install to a 5455. So if you want to try this backup your 3970 first! When you then go to | Start (menu) | Settings | Connections | Network Adapters | You will see a new adapter on your 3970 called Bluetooth PAN User Driver. I am running iPAQPanel, V3.2 which gives me a bubble on my 3970, and shows network activity. That I got as part of Rhinocode Suite.

On the 3970, you set the Bluetooth PAN User Driver to use server assign settings, and on a Win2K, WinXP set your other network card to sharred, this will auto configure the Bluetooth Adapter to the correct settings. The 3970 bluetooth connection then in effect becomes almost like a 802.11b, the tools that work on a Network connection will now work on it.

David

If you want to try this on your 3970, after backing up your 3970, do a softreset, run the program on your PC and install it to your 3970. Do another soft reset, to make sure everthing is loaded. Then setup the Bluetooth software. At this point it probably wouldn't hurt to soft reset again, and then perhaps backup to a new file. Then look for anything it may have broken for you. Which may be bluetooth phone software.
