Hi,

I Am Looking To Get A NAS Enclosure That Has The Following:

FTP ( Internet Access )
Samba ( Local LAN Access )
5 Mb/s Read Speed ( At Least So I Don't Throw It Out The Window )
3 Mb/s Write Speed ( See Read Speed Reason )
IDE Interface (1 Drive Only )

I Can't Seem To Find Anything, Can Any Of You?

One drive only? Why not use one of those NAS routers and plug a USB 2.0 drive? Otherwise the best NAS around would be the ReadyNAS - but that's a bigger box...

I Don't Want A Storage Router Unless It Has A ADSL Modem Because Double NAT Can Lead To The World's Largest Headache
( Not To Mention Having To Change 2 Places Instead Of 1, Unless You Bridge It, And If The Router Fails You're Screwed Then )
I Want A Single Drive So It Doesn't Take Up As Much Space On My Desk.

I Think I Have Found The Ideal Unit: Welland Netshare ME-740AN
However I Have A Problem Finding Any Reviews On It. Do Any Of You People Know About This Unit?

Why do you need such a high-speed disk in a NAS device? The speed is always going to be limited by the speed of the network.

And the Welland Netshare ME-740AN can only handle FAT16/32 in "Network mode" presumably to ensure that non-windows OS's can write to it across the LAN.

I use NASLite which is low cost and you can build from an old PC that would otherwise be destined for the scrapheap. Of course it does take up more space. There are several advantages however. You can use as many disks as the hardware will support and since it runs a customised version of Linux as its OS, it supports a journalised file system that allows for data recovery, unlike FAT. IMHO it's a very good system.

I too recently created a NASLite+ NAS on some old hardware I had kicking around, bought a new 250GByte Segate to go with it. Minutes to setup, works damn well. The NASLite+ version which costs around NZ$30 supports SMB/NFS/FTP/HTTP, all of which I use as I have a mix of MS and Linux clients. The free version only supports SMB which for most folk (including Linux clients) is fine.
