I have found that different modems are syncing at some times significantly different speeds on the same line.

First off when I first installed ADSL with the free technicolor telecom modem that was provided with the connection I was only able to achieve 6.5Mbps down.
When I switched this to a fritz box 7340 it was able to get 13mbps downstream.

I have now moved to vdsl with a master filter, although the speeds are not much better than ADSL2, I have found some minor speed variances.
Fritz Box 7340 is syncing between 15.5/3 (download/upload) and I tried an Innbox Rv51 which i borrowed and this got a DSL sync at 17.5/3.5mbit. I have actually got a DV130 and a microtik to replace the fritzbox mainly because i needed more ports, so am going to try this today. I was wondering if anyone else had had variances in speed over differnt modems.

Yes, particually on a terrible line like you must have there. Remember that most of a modem is analog, and the quality and design of analog circuitry is critical for good operation of it.

yep happends all the time, variances in the different chip sets, how the devices process the signals etc all contribute to differing sync speeds

So, what would be the best modem to purchase for a poor quality line such as the OP's ... a Fritz box? or the DV130 ... looking to spend whatever necessary to get the best connection possible.
Cheers

Yeh i am upgrading my dv130 and setting it up as a bridge with the PPPoE passthrough. So will let you know what the sync is like.

Yeh I got that DV130 going. Its about the same speed as that innbox was getting. about 17Mbps/3.5Mbps the speed is only a little bit better than the fritz. My ping has gone up a little but i suspect it is something to do with the DLM. I dont care so much about a 20ms ping to the B-RAS. I dont play games would prefer the extra megabit or two for downloading.

If you want an all in one unit, the Asus one on here is supposedly pretty good. Innbox seem to be ok as well. I am going to sell my 7340. But if you want a bridge people are recommending the Zyxels or a DV130. The Innbox and a few other routers will do bridge mode, but not a lot of point spending the extra on a all in one unit if you are going to scrap it for bridging.

Pity this line is a bit average. But yeh for poor lines people only getting a couple of meg on ADSL I would recommend looking for a better quality modem. That Technicolor modem from telecom is only useful to me as a wireless access point the DSL throughput was quite bad.

Big fan of the DV130's.  IIRC there are a few different firmware versions available for download for better compatibility with different DSLAMs.

Yeh, I see the different firmwares.

How do you determine which one to use?

I wouldn't focus on the sync speed too much.  It is just an indicator.  The actual measured throughput is more important.

For example, one modem may give a much higher sync rate yet have lots of data errors causing a lower throughput than another modem which was more conservative but needs no re-transmits.
