So a friend has received one of these units, and all the data sheets and pages online point towards it being a Wireless AC unit.

Yet under wireless settings, in the drop down for band it only has '2.4ghz'. No 5ghz is broadcast, and the only reference to 5ghz is under channel width you can select "40mhz for 2.4ghz, 40mhz for 5ghz".

Cannot update firmware as this appears to be one of those annoying units where only ISPs have the firmware available.

Anyone else with this unit?

My partner's parents have this router as well, and yes, you can only select 2.4Ghz. Really annoying as they live in a huge apartment building with almost total saturation of the 2.4G spectrum. Also annoying as I had advised them to get a more expensive, 5Ghz-capable wireless NIC because, like you, I expected their new router would support it.

I don't know whether AC/5Ghz is supported by the hardware and disabled by firmware. As you mentioned, the trace mentions of 5Ghz support scattered throughout the web interface makes me suspect this is the case.

As it's an ISP-supplied unit that also handles VOIP I gave up on doing anything with it.

If it's R2 only version you have the Single band router.

R2 AC is the dual band version .

Ah yes. I also got in touch with Full Flavour who also gives these out to their customers.

They confirmed the same but could give more details, specifically that its approximately the same unit, however it lacks the AC radio hardware added, and the firmware has most of the traces of it removed from it

It's a bit confusing to be honest.

"R2" = normal N.
"R2 AC" = AC.

The firmware releases we've seen are identical.

As far as I'm aware, no one in NZ has the R2 AC yet, the supplier that brings them in should have them landed and in the hands of RSPs by the end of the month.

In our performance testing these routers are capable of 1Gbps and perform slightly better than the HG659b that both Vodafone and Spark supply.

RRP somewhere between $250 and $300.
