Will your street cabinet keep running?

No part of the fibre network requires power, so yes.

BTW there is no such thing as a "street cabinet" any longer either, at least in Chorus areas. These only existed in the first year of the UFB rollout. The architecture has moved on quite considerably to ABFAT's closer to the premises.

Yes. I've tried it with a 240V UPS and one of these DC UPS's. Highly recommend the sentry lite, cheaper and more effective than a regular UPS for this situation. A 7ah battery lasts around 5h - I'm going to keep a 33AH battery on a solar charger.

I will admit that I don't know the details of the UFB hardware implementation but I would have thought the little light at the end of the pipe needs power. Does that mean my pipe is a single pipe all the way back to the exchange or wherever it goes to?

I'm plumbed into a cabinet across the road so what's in there? All passive stuff?

Yeah, in there is a passive splitter in the street cabinet which connects from memory up to 12 houses in to one fiber which goes back to exchange. Meaning it is lit from exchange. Or is passive splitter at exchange? That would make less sense but allow for unbundling

Last time we had a power cut it was 930 PM. After about 2 minutes, I got very, very bored :-)

I think I started reading a book. They always work.

Unbundling always makes more sense! Unfortunately in countries that have put splitters in the exchange (home-run fibre) its averaged about 20% more expensive than putting them in the street. Year 4 build has moved away from "FFP" splitter cabinets and now has them in pits closer to the house. The ABFAT doesn't contain splitters, its only a convergence point that allows the fibre to be spliced. Each splitter can share up to 32 connections onto the shared fibre but some of the newer designs may have only 16. This is no big deal since most of the contention occurs at the exchange and the ISP where many more users share the network uplinks/backhaul.

Time to find a new industry!

Look at the link I gave you. That's a far better option than a generic 230V UPS.

9AH will last around 7 hours. I personally also want a not-connected spare. My logic is if I'm at work when a major earthquake hits it may take me 6 hours to get home. Once I get home I may want internet connectivity, assuming the infrastructure works, but the connected battery could be drained already. So I'm going to keep another battery available, on charge, but disconnected.

I bought a battery from these guys. You can get up to around 35AH, and if you're crazy you can buy 150AH batteries elsewhere - they're made for home solar.
