Hi guys,

So I have bought a house and found out today that i may be waiting up to a month to get internet connected. Not ideal as i have tenants moving in next week.

Luckily, my friend lives in the neighbouring house and said i can leech his WiFi until then, unfortunately his WiFi doesn't reach my house as there are a obstruction / range issues.

I have been researching WiFi extenders/repeaters/access points to try and come up with a solution.

His main router is in his lounge and there is a garage between me and him. I don't want to lay any cables in his house but i can lay cables from my garage to my house (reasonable WiFi signal in the garage).

Is it possible to add a WiFi extender inside my garage (to pick up his WiFi) and connect it via ethernet cable to a wireless access point in my house? Will that work or am i missing something?

Maybe there is a better/easier/cheaper way of doing that someone can enlighten me?

Thanks for your time!

i believe you need a device with WDS (Wireless Distribution System) im unsure if your neighbours device will need this too, but it may be the case

Running an outdoor cable will be the best solution. But you mentioned you didnt want to do that.

So the next best solution would be to create a wireless bridge of some sort. I have equipment that will do it (a couple of nanostation M5)'s but you will need to find an area where they can clearly see each other, and you mentioned there were obstructions, so perhaps that is out of the question?

You can try bridging using consumer access points, i have only ever done this with an old WRT54G with success, and you might be able to get a few meg which will probably be good enough for web browsing. It will probably be crap for streaming video.

A router in the garage that does WISP mode to connect to the neighbours network as a client for its WAN and then NAT it to its ethernet port, and then a cable or powerline bridges from the ethernet port of that router to the inside of the house where you can plug it into a PC or into an accesspoint to share it with other devices.

Dont try to use the same router as an accesspoint and as the client, yes it is supported but it will really screw thruput up like using a repeater does.

Most of the TP link range of cheap ones will do WISP mode for the WAN.

Thanks for the replies.

Will these two devices do the trick?

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NETTPL0850/TP-LINK-TL-WA850RE-N300-Wireless-Range-Extender-wi

"The TL-WA850RE's single Ethernet port allows the Extender to function as a wireless adapter to connect wired devices like Blu-ray  players, gaming consoles, DVRs and Internet TVs. At the same time, the device can share the wireless network as well"

Then run a Ethernet cable to this Wireless access point:

Extender will end up putting all your devices onto the neighbours network and visible, no firewall between them. I wouldnt go doing that. Not sure if that one supports WISP mode which will put NAT between your gear and the network you are borrowing from so they dont start seeing your stuff pop up to stream to etc. Its not something that seems to get advertised too well, but its designed for when people are at a trailer park or similar place that has wifi for customers to connect to, the wifi is the wan and all your stuff is firewalled off from it.

54M means it is obsolete 802.11G so no, avoid that at any cost. While it does have WISP mode, it will suck at it. Best stick to 802.11n.

The MR2030 has WISP mode, and is quite a capable little router for the price. USB powered. I have one that I had in the car to connect to the phonebox wifi to then share it among several devices when I was staying at a friends bach with no internet. Stuck it at the bottom of the drive in the mailbox with a USB powerbank and it repeated the phonebox wifi up to the house. Beats their idea of standing at the end of the driveway to facebook ;)
