Hey everyone

I have a strange issue with my wifi router. Its generally pretty slow at the best of times (I live in AU, the internet is terrible compared with NZ), and often it will slow to a crawl. To fix this I have found that reconnecting to the router by turining airplane mode off/on will speed up the connection.

This happens on iOS and on Win10. What is causing this and how can I fix it?

Cheers

Steve

I would assume you're probably using the congested 2.4 GHz band, with lots of neighbours on the same or overlapping channels. When you turn airplane mode on/off, this cycles the WiFi on/off. Your devices are then reconnecting on a clearer (less congested or overlapped) channel, allowing for faster speed... for a while at least!

If your router and devices can use the 5 GHz band that would probably help as there is usually less congestion there. If you're stuck on 2.4 GHz, try using a WiFi scanning app to find the clearest channel and lock your devices to that instead of letting them auto select, (maybe channel 13 if your devices allow it.)
