Hi all,

I am trying to setup a streaming device to stream video wirelessly and one of the options I am trying is the following:

The device acts like a WiFi access point. When I connect my laptop it gets the IP 192.168.8.100 while the device has 192.168.8.8 . I want to hook this laptop up to an ethernet connection that will supply internet and through this, stream an rtsp stream from the device to Facebook or YouTube.

So essentially I want to connect the WiFi network of my Windows 10 laptop to the Internet through the wired internet connection.

There are a whole lot ofoptions online (bridging, ICS, routing tables) but my routing knowledge has gone rusty and really don't know where to begin, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your post is a bit confusing so if I'm understanding right you're trying to connect as below:

[DEVICE] <> {Device-hosted Wifi Hotspot} <> [LAPTOP] <> {Ethernet} <> [ROUTER / MODEM / INTERNET]

The simplest option would be for you to create the "hotspot" on the laptop instead of the device.

Otherwise it's just a matter of connecting the laptop to the device wifi and bridging the ethernet connection however you may have to manually set the gateway on your device to that of your router and ensure it is on the same subnet.

More details would help provide a better answer.

Yes that is the topology I am trying to achieve.

Setting the device as a client to my laptop (as a hotspot) does make sense. However, when the device is reset it defaults to being in AP mode and I want to make this work with as less fiddling as possible, hence thinking of leaving it in AP mode.

I have tried bridging by following that link and yes, have manually setup my gateway too, but didn't seem to have much luck. :(

There are a few different options to get it working that way however you start getting into pretty complex routing.

Assuming your router has an IP of 192.168.X.X give it a subnet of 255.255.0.0 (this will allow the router on e.g. 192.168.1.1 to communicate with the device on 192.168.8.8).

Bridge your ethernet and wifi connections on your laptop and give both a subnet of 255.255.0.0.

Give your device a subnet of 255.255.0.0 and a gateway corresponding to the IP of your router.

When your device "resets" however will it loose these settings? Maybe there's a way to address that with a battery, UPS or firmware hack.

What's the device you're working with?

More like a GoPro. AP mode only and no gateway can be set.

And although I have control over the wired connection parameters, the wifi when in AP mode does not give me control over the IP range it works on.

My project is as follows

I have my camera, this device and my laptop.
I arrive at a random venue that has a reliable Ethernet connection. I connect the laptop to the internet via Ethernet (DHCP, so will get any address from that network) and then reset the device and connect the laptop to it. I would like at this point to be able to immediately start streaming from my camera wirelessly. Hence, I do not have control over the Ethernet parameters, so can't unfortunately change the subnet mask.

Your most straightforward and reliable option is to simply connect the device directly to the wifi network at your location; and/or carry a little wifi access point with you in case you only have ethernet access (even better is an access point that also supports a 4G dongle as a backup).

In my experience the bridging / sharing features on Windows can be pretty unreliable.

What I did try and it worked, was turn my topology around a bit. I used the Laptop as the access point through the very easy Windows 10 setup and switched the device from AP mode to a client of the Laptop WiFi and it streamed successfully to FB.

I am not keen in connecting directly to the wifi at location, just because of a whole lot of traffic restricting or congestion issues that may affect a public WiFi hotspot. But the idea of my own access point is a very good one, as I have a spare HG659, which I think can also have a 4G backup option. Thanks for your help!
