Hi All

I do a lot of work with IP cameras, and am rapidly discovering that quite a few of the combination modem/router/AP units that ISP's give away or sell to customers are basically e-waste straight out of the box.

I've had numerous cases of people having problems with their camera systems, which prove impossible to troubleshoot, until I look up their model of modem/router and discover they have documented issues, usually with some aspect of routing.

What I'm after is suggestions for combo modem/routers that will just work, that I can recommend to people with dud units. They don't need all the bells and whistles, just be a good price, and work well.

I'm guessing that there probably isn't an ADSL/VDSL/UFB model that fits the bill?

If not, what is a good suggestion for ADSL/VDSL and for UFB?

I have faith in the HG659. I have been using them for 3 years now without issues. I had a NAS running with cameras and a little server on a 100/50 VDSL connection without any issues for months. The internal network was getting hammered 24/7 by video saving to the NAS and family streaming from my plex server around the place. WiFi was pretty solid and didnt have any issues with my tp link extender, The fritz box it replaced wouldnt want anything to do with the extender.
People on here will flame them to death, Go get one and make the decision yourself. I wonder why VF, Spark, Bigpipe use this modem and swear by it.

Looks like HG659 is solely a Spark product, so not something that I can recommend people buy regardless of who their ISP is.

Worth keeping in mind for Spark customers though, thanks.

I have a lot of respect for @TimA 's opinions, but we've had repeated issues with the HG659 series when used in a commercial environment. Weird stuff like pinholes just disappearing.

Our go-to brand is Draytek, and we've come across a number of VoIP companies that recommend them. Of course you need stability when working with VoIP.

If you are in the trade, talk to SnapperNet.co.nz about buying from them. In our experience buying from Snapper over the last 10 years, the pricing is fair and the support is outstanding. These guys are absolutely our go-to guys for network equipment wherever possible.

Use Mikrotik or Ubiquiti Edgerouter and bridge copper with a Draytek.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.
