I purchased today a ASUS A2500DC Laptop with ASUS 802.11g Wi-Fi card inbuilt. I also purchased a Dick Smith 802.11g PCI Wi-Fi card for my desktop. They are both setup for AD HOC on channel 11 and can see each other but neither will receive packets from the other (eg both show packets being sent but neither show them being received). Any ideas?

Hi adamj,

My experience is with 802.11b ad-hoc, rather than g, but here are the things that (still) catch me out when I'm setting them up.

1. PCs not having the same SSID. Sounds basic, but it doesn't hurt to double check. Press the END key and make sure there are no extra spaces tagged on the end.

2. PCs not using the same encryption setup. When debugging connection problems, I disable encryption.

3. Firewalls blocking communication. Again, when debugging, I disable firewalls.

Without more details of your setup, this is about all I can suggest. Hope something here helps.

Bryan

After weeks of trying to get the Ad-Hoc network to work I gave up. Neither the ASUS or the DSE helpdesk could identify settings that were incorrect (bare in mind I run a network solutions business so I do know alot about it myself). I went out and bought an access point and was away laughing in less than 5 minutes. I would not recomment Ad-Hoc...too slow and too many hassles.
