All

We have UFB atr home, Fritz Box 7490, all firmware up to date etc..

The UFB box and Fritz box are down stairs and in a office but the smart 4K TV and all other wifi devices suffer lag around the house especially upstairs.

So what shall we do? I am really not wanting to run LAN cables all over the house (that what my kids are say) but must be a better way.

Looking at purchasing Asus RT-AC88U?

Or extender / boosters, but i think this may suffer as well?

We really need to boost the wifi strength around the house and remove the streaming lag as much as possible..

i did the lan cable route , 40 meters $25, 20-30 minutes to do the job and you have to look hard to see the cable.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

streaming lag happens when watching 4K HD program's on smart tv via wifi connection.

Also other devices slow down (streaming or gaming) when connected via wifi.

My order of preference:

1. Cable it

2. Powerline kit it

3. Router - move it

4. Live with it.

Using extenders should never be an option. They're terrible and halve your WiFi speed.

Really - you're needing to either run Ethernet or use those Ethernet over Powerline adapters. Upgrading your router really won't work in your case (as the Fritz has pretty good wireless). I'd strongly recommend looking into a proper WiFi solution like either Ubiquiti UniFi AC-Lite or the Granstream GWN7610 connected to your existing router (and disable WiFI on it). Running Ethernet to the upstairs area to a point in the ceiling and mounting a unit upstairs and also downstairs will provide far better WiFi than any off the shelf consumer grade router could provide.

You'll get better WiFi performance by purchasing 2x UniFi AC-Lite's (Link) and installing them central in your house by running Ethernet. Since they're powered over Ethernet you only need to run a single Ethernet cable in the ceiling to both central locations and ceiling mount them. There is also a controller I run in my signature for them.

Don't go with the most expensive off the shelf type router - there are plenty of better solutions out there for cheaper. You're buying into marketing otherwise.

you mean buffering? lag is to do with ping if the video stutters then its a speed/bandwidth problem.

IMO keep the fritz and get an access point for upstairs.
