Hi,

This is my first post since Bluetoothguide.com merged with Geekzone...

Well, I have just recieved WIDCOMM software/drives version 1.4.1.6 to test. I haven't installed it yet, I have to wait to arrive home...

The new set includes HID profile and a new "anti-copy protection" system. To install it, you need a serial number that you have to ask for it, giving the MAC of your Bluetooth dongle. Some kind of hardware key.

This way, each company ensures that their software is only used by their customers... (thinking in TDK Systems???). This protection is the reason that is delaying the final release of this version of the stack.

I will make a full preview during this week, and hope to post it at my web by weekend.

If you understand spanish language, you may read it here: http://espaciointerior.webcindario.com

This is good news... If you could post a translation here that would be cool. Or if you I can translate and post it.

Yes I can read Spanish too, being a native Portuguese speaker from Brazil (hmm, this adds to more than five languages in my house ).

I will have to make the install tomorrow, I'm downloading a really big file right now and don't want to stop it to reboot the PC.

Meanwhile, I can tell you that HID is included as definitive version of the profile estandard.

The Bluetooth dongle as hardware key is a interesting thing... They needed the MAC of my dongle to generate the code to install this new versión of WIDCOMM software. This pack doesn't include the tools for P800 and 7650 included in TDKSys 1.3.2.19 release, but BlueAlert won't be needed ever again.

There is no DFU file, so no new firmware for CSR based dongles.

About translations, I will try to make a dual-language preview, and it will have lots of screenshots. Like my review of Conceptronic Bluetooth Class 3 USB dongle

Well, more news as soon as I have them!

I've just download the 1.4.2.1.zip file, but TDK advised me I didn't need the Key... Strange. I'll install in my notebook, but it's still a beta version.

Mmmm... 1.4.2.1? It must be soo new, cuz 1.4.1b6 is dated last week.

Anyway, I've installed it, and yes, it asked me for the 32 char code to install. I received some "script errors" till I uninstalled former version, and tried again.

Found some problems finding devices, as well as finding the services available at those devices. Sometimes, when I want to use a local service, or check its state, the software start installing it (as windows' "new hardware found" procedure).

Tested some profiles: dun (GPRS), fax (GPRS), serial, obex and audio. All of them worked fine.

More news, soon!

Yep, just installed in my notebook and desktop. It does support HID (mouse and keyboard) and some other features.

I've installed it and both synchronisation to my T39m and internet sharing with my H3970 are working great .

Interesting it doesn't ask for any key, and TDK told me it's only needed for TDK Mobile, which doesn't come with the drivers (it's a separate download).

I have just realized the availability of HID, but no other new features/bugfixes in 1.4.1.6 version.

Some problems with install script, but it seems to work ok.

I've got it from a TDK beta FTP site. The zip is password protected too. It's not available to the public yet.

Freitasm, with 1.4.1.b6, each time I stop/start the Bluetooth device, and when I start up windows, the software make a search for HID devices. And it is automated, I can't find the way to disable this search.

Does it happens with 1.4.2.b1 too??

I talked with the "people" that provide me with 1.4.1.b6 and they told me that:

- Different version number is due to custom developing, not real different version. Yours is TDK version, mine is xxxxxxxx version. Each brand want special features at their software, you know.

- The hardware key install protection is for beta leaking avoiding. They are developing a transparent way to check the hardware prior to install the software. Maybe TDK has implemented that in the build you're testing, but anyway, it is under testing. This is the main cause of release delay.

- The (possible) errors at install script are being corrected.

Hmmm. No it doesn't happen here. As you say, it might be a different implementation. TDK is usually very good at releasing the software before others...

I have been following the progress of the widcomm stack for some time now, as I was one of those foolish people that bought a microsoft mouse hoping for the serial and hid profiles but not getting them:(. Anyhow, when I tried the 1.3.2.7 stack, I was able to get the MS tranciever to work with the serial profiles, my t68i, etc, but not the mouse (obviously because of the lack of the profile). I am dead certain at this point that microsoft is not going to release a driver update to help fix this, so I was wondering if anyone has any clue if widcomm is going to release a generic version of the 1.4 stack or if the tdk stack could be slightly modified to use a different transciever. (they are both based upon a csr chipset, right?) AND, if it is possible, where can i get a copy of these drivers to try out and see if it works........

Thanks!

Manufacturers usually invest time in R&D, including developement of special functions, testing, beta testing, etc... That's why the software is essentially the same, but locked into each product.

It's like TDK do all the development and testing, and little BlueCopycat (ficticious) just use TDK's software. Not fair.

What I see is lots of companies that have Bluetooth devices but not updated software. BlueTake is one with updated drivers, so is TDK.

I'd uy a TDK adapter and keep the MS Bluetooth and Mouse. As a temporary solution, TDK list in their site (FAQ) a way to make MS Bluetooth stack to run with their software.

D-Link now offers 1.4.1 b6 from their website for the DBT-120 dongle. You still have to request the 32 digit security from Widcomm though.

So far, I have had better success with the Microsft Mouse with this Widcomm stack than with the Microsoft software! I still cannot get my P800 to connect though...

I tried a beta copy of 1.3 drivers and while it installed perfectly it would not initialize the bluetooth USB adapter without the proper passcode, which of couse I did not have.

I am curious ot know why in the world you would want to pasword protect hardware drivers? This is not done with video cards and users are free to use any of the drivers including the reference drivers from Nvidia and Radeon. Just doesn't make sense to me.

Since so many of these USB dongles are built on the same hardware widdcomm should release drivers to anyone that wants them. It's not like I am stealing something. With Belkin in particular their box advertises that the USB device works with ANY Bluetooth 1.1 complaint devices. of course NOW they tell me the dongle i bought may not support headset profiles. So much for truth in advertising.

I have the 1.4 beta from TDK and it did not ask for anything during installation. Actually my contact at TDK told me there's no such thing - at least on their software - when running with their own adapter.

I agree about the simplified release. The majority are based on CSR reference design, and almost all use Widcomm. Should be free for everyone. Like you said, NVIDIA doesn't care who makes the card, but what GPU is running the show.

Regarding the headset profile, it's implemented from version 1.3 on Widcomm software. I was told by a Belkin support person that Belkin will skip 1.3 and go directly to 1.4. So, just wait a little and try again.
