Hi,

I have two fritzbox 7490's and want to run them as a mesh network only for the wifi while keeping my exisiting router for PPPoE/DHCP/Firewall etc. Has anyone else done this and if so how. I want to keep my old router as the fritzbox is lacking advanced features im used to.

Ive played around with it and believe unless one of the fritzbox is setup as a Mesh master then you cant setup the mesh and as soon as i set one as a mesh master it enables DHCP etc again. Can I not just set them up as a wireless mesh repeaters?

Hi there

I have done this for my parents and works a treat behind their spark provided router.

You need to set one of the 7490's to a mesh master and dont forget to check the following  box on the mesh settings page:

This FRITZ!Box is a network device (IP client) in the home network of a different router. It receives an IP address from the router

Then click on connected via Lan and that should disable the DCHP etc and then set up the other 7490 as a mesh repeater.

For any interested it works fine but i recommend you reset the modem config first to drop all previous settings...  once done correctly the network will show as below.

Some instructions

  1. Setting up a FRITZ!Box without its own internet connection as the Mesh Master
  2. Setting up the FRITZ!Box as a Mesh Repeater
