Hi all
I have a Linksys WAG54GP2 in my house and a WRT54G in the garage. The two are connected together by a cable. What i want to do is make the wrt extend the wireless network that the wag54 is propogating so that there is only one network. At the moment there are two wireless networks on my property but i only want one.
Any questions/clarifications please ask!
Cheers
Allan

Hi, I recommend that you use the WRT as a AP rather than a router, as such turn its DHCP server off, move its LAN IP address into the address space of the WAG, however make it a static address, this means you may need to modify the WAGs DHCP pool to set a few statics aside, I normally make a DHCP server run say 191.168.1.20 - 192.168.1.254, this leaves the space 1-19 for static IPs, so the WAG and WRT will live there, if you have any LAN printers, NAS or other fixed network devices, then set them in the static space also.

Then connect the WRT to the WAG using one of the WRTs LAN ports, not a WAN port, leave the WAN port unconnected. The end result is a full Layer2 network, obviously you should use different channels at least 7ch apart to prevent interference.

Hi.
What I have is: One WAG54GP2 in the house with a wireless network This Wag has a network called linksys_house. There are four computers connected to this wireless. Then there is a WRT54G in the garage connected to the WAG via a cable that runs the length of the property. This WRT has a network called linksys_studio. There is only one laptop that connects to this mainly but it is too far away to recieve the signal from the linksys_house network. What I want to do is get rid of the linksys_studio network and make the linksys_house network extend out the WRT.

Oh ok, but what wrong with having to APs to cover a larger property, thats what you are meant to do. You could use a higher gain antenna on the WAG or place it more suitably to cover both areas. What kind of distance are the two apart.

To have just the one wireless network just set both wireless routers to the same SSID/network name, same security type (WEP,WPA,WPA2 etc) and the same security key.  Just have one on say channel 1 and the other on channel 11 but this won't really matter too much if, as you say, the wireless routers are quite far apart.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Exactly, if you have common SSID then the clients should automatically move between (not always assured as some clients are a bit light in this area) but they should still be on seperate channels to prevent interference.

Hi
I have fixed my problem
I set both routers with the same SSID, encryption and key and now my clients can move seamlessly between them.

Hi Allan, good to see you got that sorted, I do recommend you convert the WRT to a AP rather than router (if thats how you have it configured) as using the router function (ie via the WAN port) will limit through put and also mean you have double nating, which is not good.

Cheers
Cyril
