I am getting very poor range between my Belkin bluetooth access point
F8T030 and a tungsten T: about 3-4m, and no chance of going through a
wall at all. I don't think it's the tungsten as I can connect to my
bluetooth phone (SE K700i) over greater distances and through the same
walls (BT Ap and phone sitting next to each other). Also the tungsten is a class 2 device and should handle aout 10m OK.

Have I got a dud AP? Any settings I need to enable: I couldn't see
anything in the manual about this, or on the Belkin website.

Thanks,

Dan

Hello, Dan.

I'm Ted Marshall, Vice President of Software Development for Roving Networks, Inc. We developed and maintain the F8T030 for Belkin.

There is definately something wrong with one of your units. We have several T3s and we get at least 5 meters range with no problem. And no, there is no user accessable power adjustment. In fact, the power is controlled internally by the Bluetooth module attached to our board. We don't even have control over the power.

It looks likely that you do have a bad AP. You should try getting a replacement.
I'd also like to let you know that we have a new firmware release, 2.0(20), that has full PAN support and full support for the Microsoft XP SP2 Bluetooth stack. We have released this to Belkin support but I don't have any control over how long it takes them to put it up on their site. In the meantime, you may download it from our site. If you go to www.rovingnetworks.com/support.html, you will find a link to the release notes that include the installation instructions. Also on that page are instructions for printing from Windows XP and 2000.

This new release won't help your range problem but once you get that straightened out, you should upgrade.

Tom,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have just successfully upgraded the firmware and although access does seem quicker the connection still drops at about 2.5m range.

I will look into buying a replacement AP, or maybe a WiFi PDA.

Dan
