Greetings. For months I have been blaming my NFV18 Netcomm on fibre for poor wifi performance, except my phone wifi has always been robust around the house, and ethernet no problem either. Our streaming UHD TV is fine till someone uses the microwave (to be expected).

The other day I installed a new Tenda AC11 router, with a good reputation for superior wifi performance. Since installing, my 2 daughters who are gamers, have been complaining the wifi is even worse.

My 22 year old says that on her new gamer PC it seems to reboot, and watching movies on her phone not so good. My 18 year old said her Playstation was regularly hanging, making gaming difficult. So while I was talking to her (and in the same room), I asked her forget the wifi password, then to reboot the Playstation, log back in to wifi, then do a speed test. At the same time, I did a speed test on my phone getting 20Mbps up, 80Mbps down. After reboot, the Playstation network diagnostic showed she was getting about 2Mbps up, 12-20Mbps down. We did a few tests, and this poor performance continued for her, and my expected performance remained.

Interestingly, both daughters wifi signal is strong on PC and PS.

I do not have portable 2.4Ghz phone active (a possible cause of interference).

There is no wifi bandwidth limits on the router. Im wondering if anyone knows; are there ports that you need to whitelist for Playstation and PC gaming?

If yes then that would partially explain, but my experience with blocked ports is you either get nothing or normal throughput.

Or anyone had similar issues that they sorted?

Certainly, the signal strength has not been an issue on either the NFV18ACV or the AC11.

Regards,

Al.

5.4Ghz wifi is faster, less contested and not subject to interference from microwave. downside is shorter range. Try forcing stuff onto 5.4Ghz.

With significant gaming in your household, I would seriously consider running a wired network. Will improve ping stability, and permanently remove WiFi performance issues.

Hi there. With Mimo, Id expect the router to provide the fastest wifi throughput. Agreed on 5Ghz though, when I get home I'll disable the 2.4Ghz band which their systems may be defaulting to. Its weird that a new Playstation performs worse than my Redmi Note phone.Regards, Al.

MIMO requires both ends to support the technology for example if you have a 3x3 2.4 and 4x4 5.8 that means nothing if the client doesnt support it

Like buying a Wi-Fi6 access point and expecting Wi-Fi6 performance but none of the clients support W-iFi6 so the new access point is still just what ever the clients support

Note that different ps4 versions have different wifi radios inside them. Only the newer slim and pro have 5.4ghz capability.
I also wouldn't count on the ps4 network test as being a good metric for speed tests. I recall people saying that somehow changing the DNS servers somehow improved speed? Which makes no sense to me but as a whole its a bit iffy.

I ended up throwing a powerline adapter just for the ps4 pro as it tends to move around the house as I just couldn't rely on the wifi radio even on 5ghz

Yes I was considering that option too, but one report was 5Ghz was better than. Thanks.

i get the same speed on wifi as i do on wired connection on my PS4. which is my line speed of my VDSL connection (70/30)

i would be trying to run a wired connection to each device if i could

Understood but with the house config, and its only games, a twisted pair is not practical. I'll have another look at the power modulator option if exclusive 5Ghz doesnt cut it. Will advise later what worked on this thread.

Thanks for suggestions folks.

Had this earlier this week, just upgraded a client to new HP Elite Dragon Fly laptops which open files off their server amazingly fast over WiFi, and couldn't explain to them why their old Surface pro 4s were so slow but were fine on wire

MIMO only does MIMO if EVERY single device connected to that band is MIMO. if you have 99 MIMO devices and one is not MIMO it will not do MIMO

My impression is the same applies with WIFI-6 ...

Because Surface devices SUCK at WiFi.

yep surfaces are extremely bad, when they come off powersavings, often they dont initate properly so they just run dog slow.

I've got a script that after unlocking it just hard disables and reenables the interface to work around this..

I reacall @michaelmurfy has something slightly more user friendly though.

Its because its a Surface Pro 4 with 2x2 mimo and 4 years old, the HP Elite Dragonfly is 4x4

"Only Games"

Gaming is one of the most demanding network applications there is. It is quite latency sensitive.

I retrofitted Cat6 wiring into my house. Quite a chore, but worthwhile. I used TV wiring as a mouse-line to get the wiring from the roof space to behind the TV for example.

Hopefully you see some gains from locking to 5.4Ghz.
