Network noob here, sorry. I wanted to install an extra RJ45 outlet, so I bought some CAT6 cable on TradeMe. Cut off the plugs, asked someone to pull the cables through the walls, so far so good.

Then I tried to punch them into RJ45 key stones, but it wasn't working. Then I found out about the difference between solid and stranded cables, and the fact you can't punch down stranded cable into a keystone.

I've got some RJ45 plugs; would it be possible to crimp plugs onto the stranded cables, and then somehow connect it to a short solid cable with a female connection at one end, and then punch down the other end into the keystone?

I really don't want to replace the cable with solid, if possible.

Yea.... don't punch stranded cable down on an IDC, you will have a bad time. Shouldn't really use stranded cable in a permanent link, but whatever, no sense pulling it out now.

Crimp a plug (designed for stranded cable), and then just use a "rj45 keystone coupler" to mount in your wall plate.

As mentioned the only way to terminate a stranded cable is with a proper stranded RJ45 crimp connector. Solid RJ45 connectors will not work.

stranded cable wont work punched down onto a keystone (the jack actually cuts into the shielding when you punch it down but needs solid cable to do so)

Are you in Wellington? I have 305M rolls of solid core  you can have a few metres of

Thanks. Cool, I crimped a plug, looking for an rj45 keystone coupler, but can't seem to find one that fits the wall plate I have. I've got this Inovo wall plate: https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=2739703544

which has rounded keystones. But all keystones I find online are square. Am I missing something or is my wall plate incompatible with normal keystones?

Hi those are Amdex mechs, you can get Amdex to keystone adaptors at the electrical wholesale or even pbtech.

Thats a knockoff of a clipsal plate. There are converters to allow a normal keystone into them, but like the PDL ones it makes the latch too far recessed and you will find the tab of plugs just bends instead of releasing when trying to get things out of them with those adapters.

Wow, learning more every day, this is very helpful! So together with those Amdex clips, I can e.g. use these keystones in my Inovo wall plate?

Sorry for the stupid questions, really appreciate your response!

Might be worth double checking the INOVO wall plate doesn't already have the keystone adapters. If my memory is correct, the ones from Mitre10 used to have those adapters included - and you could use any of the standard keystones with them. The INOVO one linked looks very similar.

You're right, they are detachable, awesome. Will order some keystones :)
