I've got a Fritz 7590 on UFB - does anyone now if there's a button anywhere in Fritz!OS GUI to disconnect it from the internet? I saw one which read "Reconnect" but nothing that would just drop the connection altogether.

I ended up just pulling out the WAN cable, but I really don't want to keep doing that every time.

Why do you want to disconnect it from the internet? Knowing a bit more you might get more useful advice.

Kids. Can't be bothered to individually change the device profiles every time I want to get them off their devices outside of their normal "offline" hours that I set with parental controls.

Now, I am sure I can get a whole lot of advice on how to raise my kids, but all I'm after really - is a simple way to turn off the internet without touching the wires.

Have you looked into Fritzbox parental controls? Maybe they can achieve what you need more easily? It looks easy enough to set time based controls, and you can always log in and change the device profile to "blocked" or similar.

Yes, I use these extensively. That's not what I'm after though.

At a particular point in time I want to be able to completely disconnect web access for all devices on the network. This includes gaming consoles, tablets, mobiles, chromebooks, etc. I really don't want to go one by in parental controls and block each one. I just want to be able to disconnect them all.

Turning wifi off won't help either because consoles, tv and home theatre are on Ethernet.

I typed your query into Google and found this page, with the text below. It's not quite as easy as you wanted, but it might help? A bunch of clicks and you're done. This isn't really a standard requirement so you might struggle. You could do something with DNS maybe?

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Filters" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Click "Block" for all of the devices that may not access the internet.
  4. Select the desired access profile for all of the device that have unrestricted or only restricted access to the internet:

    1. Click on "Change Access Profiles".
    2. If the device should have unrestricted internet access, select the "Unrestricted" access profile from the drop-down list.

      • If you want to limit internet access for the device, select one of the access profiles you created from the drop-down list.

        Example:
You created the access profile "John" for your son. John uses his smartphone, computer, and game console to access the internet. To ensure that John's time budget includes all of his devices, assign all three of them to the access profile "John".

    3. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

Thanks for that. Looks a bit long, but your comment about DNS got me thinking. There's no way to do it through the myfritz app, so I'll need to log in to the UI either way. But if I do that, I may as well just just change connection type to "ADSL". That will do the trick. :)

I was thinking if you shut off DNS the internet won't do them much good, but then again they could hard code values into a hosts file if they were really good at that stuff. If they can do that pulling the plug might be the only solution.

Or you could get an actual firewall and put it between a WAP and the router. More hassle / more expensive. Easier to just lock devices in a cupboard ;)

I don't know if the Fritz box has this feature that my Netgear Orbi has.

I can connect to my router via phone app and by the flick of my thumb turn access to each connected device off or on, I can do this for each device weather its hardwired or wifi.

If they started another connection you would see on your app and turn it off, they would soon run out of devices.
