Just wondering what is going on: tried putting the smartphone on the router DMZ, and disabling the firewall, to no avail.

The router/wifi is the standard Skinny broadband one of Huawei HG659. Provider is KiwiVOIP; they suggested just opening port 5060, but disabling the firewall and the problem remaining put paid to that.

Any clues gratefully received.

I had an issue with a an ATA not registering with my provider when I switched to the Spark HG630b connected to Fibre and my geeky mate suggested unchecking the Enable SIP ALG check box in the Advanced/NAT menu.  Registered perfectly after that. I have not tested with 2Talk but I would suspect that the HG659b may have the same issue.  I don't fully understand this except to know that an ALG (Application Level Gateway) is a firewall system for various protocols like IP Sec, SIP etc.  smile

Might be worth giving the above go? Originally posted by comeonrichard on this thread. Might be worth a read through that thread too. Slightly different issue (trying to get the inbuilt modem ATA working), but some discussion about using other ATAs as well.

Yes try unticking SIP ALG - it breaks things

Yep disable SIP ALG for sure. Could also be CG-NAT on the Skinny connection to deal with too?

KiwiVoIP are just 2talk resellers, so you have the option of using port 50600 to register. And can also use TCP 5060 to register, which may be a good option if the connection itself is CG-NAT'd.

Thanks for the suggestions: didn't work.

For future readers, the path to the SIP setting is Internet>Forwarding>ALG>Enable SIP ALG

I will try getting Skinny to update the firmware in the Huawei, but don't hold out much hope.

You can't be serious. You tried 50600??

What app are you trying this with? I would suggest Bria Mobile (note, specifally "Bria Mobile" and not just "Bria").

It's been one of the better SIP apps for a long time, and has a push server feature where they will register your line on their servers, and just send calls to you with PUSH. An all round better option than just registering SIP directly to your mobile.

I'm with KiwiVOIP, and I'm using their own app (a rebadged Linphone). I'll try out your suggestion further down the line if I don't get it working.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Yep so you're using 2talk's version of Linphone that they rebadge for KiwiVoip.

Bria is significantly better.

the 2talk app used to work quite well for me, but I had to abandon it maybe a year ago when it was just too problematic

If you're going to use a VoIP app on a smart phone, it must use PUSH to make the phone ring rather than rely on the SIP registration being up.

Our smart phones take an extremely militant approach to shutting down background processes. And if you allow them to run, you'll just have a hot phone and a flat battery.

But to add to that, most of our mobile networks run CG-NAT. And then that screws up your standard UDP 5060 SIP registrations even more.
