Hi All,

Is it possible to tunnel through another family member's modem to access the internet? I guess I would need to set up a virtual private network somehow, but on their modem or something?

I wanted to search this topic before I posted, but it wasn't obvious how I search this forum.

Cheers

First what ISP does your family member use. If you family member is using and ISP who uses CGNAT, establishing a VPN connection to them will be difficult.

Second what router Make model do they use. Not all routers can have a VPN service installed.

Just also if we're talking about circumventing some stupid restrictions of an unnamed content provider please don't mention it here. Instead, post workarounds in the private unblocking forums (if you don't have access then PM me for access).

But that content provider looks at your routers mac address, WiFi network, IP address (local and external) and other factors. I get the impression a VPN won't get around the issue.

But there is a really simple method using Wireguard to create a VPN. You're able to get a HP Thin Client off Trademe for cheap (sometimes as low as $20) then install Ubuntu / Debian linux and set up PiVPN: https://www.pivpn.io/

Wireguard. It is built into supported routers (fritzbox), or, install it on a raspberry pi (or similar) inside their network and port forward to the Pi's wireguard service. A little fiddly to configure but not that hard. Pi option might not work if they are on cgnat though.

The fritzbox wireguard is what I use.

You could also use teamviewer if you just want remote desktop inside their network.

Is this for XXXXX? (edited out after reading MM's comment which is what I was thinking).

Because the cable won't reach that far, and wifi has a max range of maybe 50 meters.

What if they are 300km apart?

Cheers. Not sure of the details of the modem. Some have more features than others. Otherwise a raspberry pi would make sense with that software running. Thank you.
