Friend has a black Vodafone supplied router (fibre), not what make/model these were..... anyway, she bought a Wifi security camera, but it refuses to work. I took the camera home, and connected to my home Wifi (Unifi) straight away.

Anything I could look at on her router to try getting the camera working before she returns it ?

Turned off 5Ghz to eliminate any issues there but no change.

Start with the brand make model of the camera? Which router matches your friends one?

wifi 6 on 2.4Ghz is a big problem for iot stuff. Not sure if the vodafone branded gear would do it, but I have had to turn it off on others to get stuff to work.

I haven't had any issues with the DN8 and that is my dedicated AP for all things IoT.

Think your friend might have the ultra hub plus which was only AC and had cellular back up.

Would help to know what channels the UH plus is operating on the 2.4 band compared to yours.

And the camera itself.

Oops, knew I forgot something :)

Its an Anko (Kmart) camera, and the router (thanks for the link) is the Ultra Hub.

Instructions say it only works on 2.4ghz.

assume she has followed the manual to the letter for loading the app on her phone? (You might need to do that for her / from scratch)
https://www.kmart.com.au/wcsstore/Kmart/pdfs/43274604_Manual.pdf

  • looks like a few steps to take including scanning a QR code…
  • The manuals faq suggests making sure the wifiname has been entered correctly

for the ultra hub, just log in to see if both 2.4ghz and 5ghz are enabled.

Yeah been through the manual etc and I reset everything and went through the setup using her hardware, and no change. I turned off the 5ghz of the Ultra Hub, but no change.

The anko stuff is all tuya based, so set it up in the tuya app and then in the device details see if there is a firmware update. But many tuya devices are abandoned by the vendors and never see an update.

I would return it because they are crazy overpriced for what they were (not available anymore at kmart) and get something better off aliexpress for a fraction of the price.

Is it the authentication security

i.e.  WPA/WPA2 etc etc

is the camera wanting something the router isn’t set to be supporting?

Reccomendations ?

Shes on a budget and wants something indoors and be accessible over the internet, preferably with 2 way comms.

I have these to keep an eye on my 3d printers - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006136144288.html? - 5ghz wifi so they actually work and the app isn't terrible, but keeps trying to sell cloud subscriptions and if you click on it by mistake and cancel, you get an email reminding how good the cloud is.

No onvif support or anything outside their app. They do same guts in a e27 lamp and a freestanding one like the anko.

I have a couple of these for outside. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005885677969.html - only 2.4GHz but have ethernet and onvif so my NVR sees them. can aim the fixed lens by rotating the camera in the mount.

For cheap cameras there is little reason to go to the higher pixel counts as the lens seems to become the limiting factor on the 5 megapixel ones.

Should point out, I have not tried these on wifi 6 networks because I am skipping 6 and will wait for 7 before I upgrade stuff if it looks worth it, but newer tuya and other gear is fine with it out of the box. The really old software is why I expect that you may have issues with the ankos since I have got some lightbulbs from kmart not long ago that still had the really old hardware and software.
