Hey guys

What do I need to connect my Qnap switch with only normal RJ45 ports or Hyperfibre ONt with 10G RJ45 to my Asus router RT-Ax89x with a 10g SfP+?

Is there a cable for this or I need a transceiver? Any recommended brands of reasonable cost?

You've not said what model, but a quick look online: https://www.asus.com/nz/support/faq/1044066/

You need to go
ONT -> Router -> Switch.

You should be able to get a 10G DAC cable (like $30 from PBtech depending on length) if the ONT also has an SFP+ port

You then connect the switch to the router with normal ethernet cable

You will likely need a 10GbE SFP+ transceiver for the router to connect to either the switch or the ONT.

That router is overkill, and such a waste as it only has 1 usable 10Gig port and the rest are 1gig. could have had 2.5gbe ports on it.

There are two 10Gbig ports.... one RJ45 and one SFP+ (connect one to the ONT and the other to a 10G or 2.5G switch).

But agree, disgraceful vendors are making devices with 1G ports.

Hi so now looking at the routers spec sheet, it indeed sports a 10GbaseT and an SFP+ port, so all you need is a standard Cat6 from the ONTs 10GbaseT port to the routers same.

And how do you connect to the 2.5g switch? the SFP+ port appear to only support 10G

Hi it seems, and I could be wrong, but the SFP+ and 10GbaseT ports are a combo setup, and the latter supports 2.5-10G, but honestly I could be wrong that router is something I would only be found throwing in the skip.

yep me too overpriced junk

but the SFP+ would want to connect to the ONT and the 10GbaseT to the switch as its multi gig.

Just buy a 2.5g copper and 10g sfp+ switch and put a dac cable between the switch and the router

Assuming it can do both 10g ports active at once.

According to https://dongknows.com/asus-rt-ax89x-review/ the 10G ports can be used independently, one as WAN, one as LAN.

Need to make some assumptions due to lack of detail, but..

ONT -> Router -> Switch

Assuming you use the RJ45 10gb on the router to connect to the ONT, you don't want to replace the switch with something with SFP+, and the switch has 10gb RJ45 ports, you'll need to get a 10GBASE-T transceiver for the router. Something like this. Then just use a Cat6A/Cat7 patch cable.

This is what I’m planning because currently, the Ont 10g is connected to the 10gb Ethernet port and the 2.5gb switch is the wan lan port. I think it’s possible that if I connect the ONT to the SFP port using a transceiver, then I can make use of the 10G rj45 for the switch thus enabling me to transmit 2G speed to other 2.5g devices

About the Asus router, yes it’s an overkill if you buy at original price but I got this router sometime ago thru a cash converter shop for only 250 lol 😜

Thanks for all your inputs. Just to update, I’ve managed to buy an SFP to RJ45 transceiver from Amazon < $100 and slotted it in my Asus SFP, configured to be the primary wan then the other 10G RJ45 to my Switch. It worked flawlessly and happy Hyperfibre user now. Cheers
