Hi,

Looking to upgrade my home network and get this: TP-Link Deco BE25 (BE5000) Dual-Band WiFi 7 Whole Home Mesh System (3-pack for my house).

Just have 2 questions:

  1. I assume it will work with my ISP provider - Orcon (they also provided the ISP router)
  2. Is this all I need to buy: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NETTPL87253/TP-Link-Deco-BE25-BE5000-Dual-Band-WiFi-7-Whole-Ho?   i.e. no other actual router is required?

Thank you,

T

  1. As long as it supports VLAN tag 10
  2. Correct, you can use it with your ISP router or without.

Yes, that is all you need and they will work very nicely with Orcon fibre. One of the BE25's can be used to replace the Orcon supplied router (you can leave the ISP router but its better to remove it as it just makes things more complex for no good reason) and the others use that master one as the gateway. As an FYI you can get ceiling/wall mounts for these on Ali as well if you like.

I have these at home and they support vlan 10 although I use them on Quic with vlan tagging off so I don't have personal experience with setting this up on these devices.  I like the android app on my phone and I assume the iPhone equivalent would be equally as good and i like that no subscription is required to work with these on this app but you can if you want to pay for a subscription have one.  I find the units to be a good solution but my house is wired for ethernet so I do not know how well the wireless mesh works.

Here is my Quic referral https://account.quic.nz/refer/39513 if you are keen to change ISP and to get free setup (save $29). I will get a $50 credit if you use this.  Thank you very much if you use my link but I'm sure there are quite a few others who could share the same on here, no hard feelings if you use a different link.

Thank you all, reading some more on this setup:

The Deco BE25 only has:
✔ 2.4 GHz
✔ 5 GHz
✘ 6 GHz

So it supports Wi-Fi 7 features, but only on the older bands.

is that really an issue?

@noroad - if I remove the Orcon router out of the equation, how easy is the TP-Link setup to get it to work with Orcon?

Do you know whether they have an easy setup guide?

Just use the App it will guide you. It is useful to know what your current router is set for though. As in, is it PPP or DHCP, and is it vlan 10 or untagged. But pretty much install the mobile app and follow the prompts and it will do whats required.

The dual band support will only become an issue if you set up wireless backhaul linking the mesh units while in AP or mesh mode, where the Deco's will use the 5Ghz band to wirelessly link up the two nodes and therefore eating into the available bandwidth on the 5Ghz band, reducing your speed.

To get around this issue, link up the mesh nodes with Ethernet where possible.

It depends on your individual use case such as how fast your internet connection is. Many houses in NZ are not large enough to require 3 nodes.

I'm looking at purchasing a BE25 two pack so I wondered how they are going long term? I read a forum comment that MLO might perhaps cause conflicts or drops for other devices that are older, but not sure if that is a real worry!

I also wondered if you find the basic (non-subscription) features sufficient for basic QOS and parental control?

For context, our home has 4 people, 2 stories and about 160m2, and wifi isn't great on the lower level. The set-up I'm looking at is: (Bigpipe fibre) ONT > BE25 main unit > 1 gig switch > BE25 AP downstairs (wired backhaul).

The switch also feeds a few other ethernet jacks (going to 4k TV, stereo, home office), so I wondered about upgrading it to 2.5gbps since the BE25s can provide that speed but that seems unnecessary for now - we don't seem to need gigabit fibre (yet) or move large files about. Kids are in the teens now though...!

Thanks

As many have pointed out here on GZ, most people would be fine with 500/100, gigabit would be overkill let alone 2.5Gbps.

4k streaming requires a lot less bandwidth than you'd imagine, though not sure of the exact numbers.

Moving to a new apartment (140 sqm) with fibre at one corner and AV systems at the other. so I am looking at the Deco XE75s which use the 6 GHz band for the backhaul.  Currently if I look at local wifi there are dozens of signals on both 2.5 and 5 Ghz bands and all channels hence the consideration of 6  Ghz for the mesh part.  Yes, running cable would be ideal but not really a choice in an existing apartment.  Anyone have experience with these versions of the D-Link mesh systems ?
