My Setup: Dell Latitude D800 XP SP2, Motorola V600 on UK Orange. I bought a Dell Bluetooth unit (TrueMobile 300) and installed it fine with driver vA05. Then updated the driver to the (non-signed) Dell one instead of the Microsoft one - it now has WIDCOMM 3.0.1.804. I was then able to change the icon from blue/red to blue/white and then pair up with my phone - so it then went blue/green. I also edited the modem initialization string to at+cgdcont=1,"ip","orangeinternet".

My Problem: I want to establish an internet connection so that I can get email when out and about, so I set up a DUN to dial *99# with username/password blank. It dials out and connects at 115kbs but I can't browse any sites or even ping a website. The browser immediately says "Can't find server" and all pings come back unanswered.

I even uninstalled the Dell bluetooth unit and installed a cheapo USB one that had worked fine in an old laptop (XP SP1) and got the same result, so I'm guessing it's a problem with this laptop or XP SP2. As with a number of bluetooth problems, this has already consumed many hours of increasing hair-pulling and several searches haven't come up with any clues, so I'm banking on someone here having a brainwave. I have read about later versions of the WIDCOMM driver, but given that my cheapo USB bluetooth dongle worked fine on an old laptop but not this one I'm not so sure that would help.

Please help!!

Paul

Since you're using XP SP2, have you checked the built-in firewall (or any other software firewall you might have) to see if it's not blocking the Bluetooth communications? This is one of the things I'd check first.

Yes, forgot to mention, I turned the MS firewall off (and had no others running). The more I think about it the more it does sound like a firewall getting in the way - I presume with the MS one it is simply a case of setting to the off position?

Further to all that, I tried the phone on my old laptop and it turns out that it has the same problem, so I am now thinking that it could well be the phone - or have I possibly not set something up with the network? Or could it even be a network problem? I'll hijack the first bluetooth phone of a colleague that I can get my hands on to test - but I could still do with some ideas...

Ah, the phone! Forgot to say this... All these new Motorola phones require a reset command before connection. "Z" is the command and use ";" to separate commands.

Try atz;+cgdcont=1,"ip","orangeinternet". Also try without the AT command in the front (some dialers will put this there by default anyway).

No joy I'm afraid. I tried several combinations of ATs commas and semi-colons all without success. I got the log from the modem and here it is; This was after a connection, a browse (and fail) and a ping:

I see you have ATZ,+... it should really br ATZ;+...

Anyway, are you able to check with Orange that this account can connect to the Internet gateway (orangeinternet)?

Also, where it says *99#, can you change to *99***1# and *99***2# and so to see if the phone has other configurations?

Almost there!
1. I changed it back to a semi-colon, still the same result
2. I tried dialling *99***1# and couldn't connect
3. I tried dialling *99***2# and couldn't connect
4. So I went back to *99# and it worked - once!
5. Since then it hasn't worked again - very strange. So I know it can work, I'll now get onto Orange and see if they have any ideas...

Success! Turned out to be a DNS problem - the nice chap at Orange narrowed it down after a few tests. For anyone else that may have trouble here's what we did:

Go into settings for the DUN and change the DNS settings to orange's (IP addresses)
in a Dos box ran the command ipconfig /flushdns

And now it works!

Phew. Thanks freitasm for all your help.
