is wi-fi really necessary. The 7710 hasn't got it but I seem to get along fine
with GPRS and Edge.

necesary for what?

wifi has lots of uses, so does GPRS...

some people only need one or the other
other people can find a use for both...

i'm not sure what you're actaully asking...

wifi, you can set up your own network. you employer might have wifi in the office already
cafes and restaurants often have wifi avialble and this is sometimes free.
Wifi works whenever you're near an access point that you are allowed to use.
Wifi can be free.

GPRS works almost everywhere. GPRS generally costs many times more than wifi.

personally, I'd like to have both. use wifi when in range of a reasonable priced access point
use GPRS when out of range and i need to access the internet.

if you have bluetooth, then you can also set up a small wireless network in your house (range will be only 1 or 2 roooms away from your PC or access point).
generally you don't find bluetooth access point out and about in the city.

I guess it's a question of whether you want to pay more for a device with wifi (and have a bigger device to carry around)
or ia cheaper device and then want pay more for internet traffic over GPRS.
