I have a Nokia 6230 and am keen to be able to synch it with my lotus Notes info. It came with Nokia PC suite (5.8) but I also downloaded a more recent version (6.41)

http://www.nokia.com/support/tutorials/6230/english/3_1_9_4.html
Here it states that it should be compatible with the 3Com card

Whereas the more recent version
http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,,54692,00.html#requirements
removes the 3Com from the list but adds the MS native stack.

I tried the first option and couldn't get a connection between PC Suite and the phone, though I could send info to the phone via the 3Com software, pair the handset and so on. I also tried using the 3Com serial client as the connection and then selecting the serial connection in PC suite but to no avail as those serial ports weren't available to PC Suite

So I uninstalled, applied SP2, reinstalled 3 Com Hardware and software and then PC Suite. No joy. - uninstalled PC suite and tried the 6.41 version. Still no result.

The problem seems the same - I can connect to the handset with the 3Com software but I cannot with PC Suite, which I need for (hopefully) seemles synching. Having come across this site it seems that the 3Com card is not the best, and indeed neither is the 6230 BT implementation (great choices so far!). I am now reviewing my priorities.

I was really after an easy, automatic updating of my contacts and appointments between my laptop and phone whenever they were in range. To this end I envisaged a PC card that I could just leave in my laptop (unless I pull it out to put in a wireless-G card) so didn't want an aerial that would be vulnerable and the 3Com also appeared to have a higher speed - though I don't know how. I imagined the ther benefit would be that I could get a BT mouse for when I'm not "docked" and that it would run through the same card, at the same time if necessary (?). Now I doubt I can get a refund on my 3Com card - guess that's what ebay is for - but I'm prepared to buy another card if there's one that someone has managed to get to work like this, preferably with the newer (6.41) Nokia PC Suite. I see the TDK card is available here so looks like a contender but which stack does it use? I thought the Toshiba and TDK cards were the same.

It also looks from the compatibility list for the MS stack
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;841803
(posted on another thread) that the TDK USB connector is there but not the PC card - am I misreading it? Does this mean I'd be better off with a USB dongle to plug in each time? I'd rather spend the cash on a card than have to take a dongle with me - it's just that otherwise the laptop becomes a bag of bits to assemble to set up.

I see from this thread
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=8&TopicId=3311
that the TDK USB dongle uses the Widcomm stack (but is supported in ative MS Stack??) Ok I'm getting stack obssessed!

So what is my best option for a laptop card to work with PC Suite & Nokia 6230 - anyone got it to work? Failing that any dongle recommendations?

One other point to note is that after all this installing, uninstalling and re-installing I seem to have lost access to the system applet in control panel - it just seems to not work - not sure if it is relevant but points to some problem somewhere.

Thanks

James

Well I bought a USB dongle (Belkin F8T003) which uses the Widcomm software, followed the advice in the thread above about getting the Widcomm stack to work. Reinstalled Nokia PC suite (6.41) and it now works.
Not sure I understand all the various settings and so on but I have synchronisation, pairing and so on. Thank heavens for this forum! Now I just need to play with the settings to stop all those pesky confirmations and my Lotus notes info is automatically transferred.

So - what cards work with the Widcomm software?
(Now I guess I'm off to ebay with the 3Com card)

Just to keep you up to date - I plugged the dongle into a different USB port today, one of the ones on my docking station, and the problem was repeated. It seems windows detected the hardware and installed the MS drivers just because it was a new USB port (!).
The solution to "update" the driver to the belkin/widcomm one raher than the official MS Belkin one worked so I repeated it for my other USB ports in case I ever plug it into one of them. Got the blue & white BT logo but not sure if Nokia PC suite is happy yet. Works OK on the original USB port.
