Hi there. My ADSL2+ comes in to house via a splitter, so I connect my modem to the splitter ADSL socket and the other jacks in the house (3 of them) are not filtered.

Problem is my ADSL jack is at one end of the house and my PC is at the other; the wireless link between the 2 struggles, despite using high gain antennas.

Is it OK to remove the aplitter, which will then allow me to put the modem nearer the PC?

Do I need to get Telecom to do this, or can I get someone else to do it (in Christchurch)?

I have 3 phonejacks, am 1.3km from the exchange and have no monitored equipment, all of which would indicate splitter is redundant?

Why do you want to remove it?

I assume you have alright access, and could instead put the jack point at the other end of the house?

Hi

I want to get the best possible wireless signal and ADSL quality with the minimum of hassle and if I can remove the splitter without affecting the ADSL quality that would do the job. Moving the ADSL jack would involve a longish wiring run outside the house. Do you reckon getting rid of the splitter would afftect ADSL quality?

Unfortunately you cannot have both.
If you want the best you can get then the splitter needs to stay. I would suggest that you look at getting someone to put in a new jack where you want it. It could be that the splitter was installed due to the poor connection without it.

A master splitter will typically always deliver better performance than a plug in filter - infact plug in filters are not even recommended for ADSL2+, only a master filter is.

I'd suggest you rewire the master splitter. If you want to remove this and use a filter it's easy enough to bypass it but I'd pretty much guarantee you internet speeds will drop with the use of a plug in filter.

So do you reckon the removal of the splitter would have an adverse effect? A few years ago in the UK I had a normal phoneline with ADSL, and just had filters on any jack that had tel. equipment plugged in.

So what I might try, in the first instance, is to bypass the splitter and see what effect that has. Would I need telecom to do this, or is it a relatively simple wiring job that any decent technician could do?

What about using a couple of ethernet-over-powerline adapters to get the ADSL signal to the other end of the house? Too expensive?

Thanks for the suggestion. Opinion seems quite divided / poor about those adaptors; slow etc. And yes, expensive! I need to get my modem in the middle of the house rather than at the (wrong) end!

Rip off the faceplate and look at the colour of the pair being used.

(if they did it right like here... well maybe not right, but I did the internal stuff for them and said use the orange pair) Chances are its cat 3 or 5 around the house tapped into a separate pair and the rest run to the other outlets.

IE here, my splitter from the demac uses the orange pair, where the rest of the house uses the green. Easy to move by terminating the pair elsewhere.

Hi, as Oblivian says its normal for the DSL path to be on the orange pair and voice on the blue, or green depending on what cable you have. Sometimes a dedicated run is made from the demarc to the ADSL socket otherwise the orange pair is picked up from the existing wiring. The key however is that the orange(DSL) circuit must make a direct single line to the ADSL port rather than be wired to connect to all spars of the wiring. So to work out how to achieve this normally a sounder is used to identify all the wiring.

A central filter will (Splitter) is the only way that you can bypass the effects of star wiring, something inline micro filters cannot fix. A central filter is the only proper solution, inline microfilters are more likely to still result in poor speeds due to above mentioned reason and also the negative effect multiple filters across the line have on the DSL signal.
