Hi Clever people.
I'm having a few issues with my network and computers talking to each other.I have a router and a numbers of computers on my network. They can all serf the net fine but i can't seen to make then talk to each other untill i have shut the firewall off. They can ping each other threw the cmd prompt fine. They are all set at to config ip's automatically 192.168.1.xxx and the default gateway  is 192.168.1.254
. How is the best way at getting around this issue as it makes it a real pain to print stuff on my printer off other machines. My desktop is running XP SP2 and laptop XP SP1
Thanks in advance
Snow

Sorry, you haven't provided any real details. What sort of firewall is it? Installed on your PC? A piece of hardware?

I assume, from what you've posted, you're talking about a software firewall. Which one?

Hi.
It is the standard windows firewall one on both machines. The
Network has been setup with 'let window config automatically' on both machines
With the ip addresses. Umm let me know what more info you want and I'll post it.
Thanks snowie

The sad truth is that you actually have to configure the firewall correctly or it simply does what it should do by design. Simply a matter of ticking boxes for File and Printer Sharing.

The Exceptions Tab may be a place to look or try adding ports 139/TCP, 445/TCP, 137/UDP, 138/UDP.

Hi.
The file and printer shearing is active already. I reset the windows Firewall to default setup and then ran the network setup again. This created a bridge connection and now it is working. INow if you view the propities of the wireless connection it doesn't have a firewall setup. It's just got 2 tabs general and wireless networks with no advanced tap for the firewall. This was all done on my laptop .Laptop is XP SP1. I also reset the Windows firewall on my desktop to default and enable the File and printer shearing.

Since i can't see the Firewall tab on my laptop and it doesn't have a Padlock on the icon of the wirelass connection does this mean that the firewall is running or not???

Can you connect to the other computers by typing in \\192.168.1.XXX(XXX = the pc's ip address you want to access) in windows explorer?

No I can't. But you can ping it at the cmd prompt and get a reply. That's why I think it is a firewall issue

If you open your control panel, do you not have a "Windows Firewall" icon in there?

Windows Firewall was only introduced in SP2 I think?

Windows Firewall was introduced on SP1 but with lots of problems. My suggestion would be to update to Windows SP3 now via Windows Update, then check the firewall. It sounds just like it's blocking sharing services, that's all.

As for Windows SP3 update recommendation... Well, people complain about virus and malware, but don't update their machines - come on people get the latest version (unless this is a corp environment and it's locked down).

Hi freitasm / all
I Tried a while back to going to SP2 on my laptop but apparently there was a conflict with USB chip set and when i pluged my mouse in it it a reset :-(. I have reset all the computers on my system back to the "Windows Default" firewall setting and all seem to work now... Looks like some error has crept into my system somewhere as you were saying with a the network shearing/services setup

Thank for everyones help
Snow
