Sorry for a cross posting here, I only just saw this forum instead of the IPAQ one...

I'm using an IPAQ 5450 to connect to a Toshiba Tecra laptop. The wireless connection on both devices seem to recognise each other, giving a signal strength of 100% on both. This goes to zero when either one is disabled or removed, so I know they are seeing each other. The SSID seems to be recognised too.

The problem is that I cannot browse my laptop, or connec t to the Internet. I cannot ping the laptop either from the ipaq, or vice versa, using the IP addresses from the devices themselves. I have shared the drive on the laptop.

Anyone have any suggestions or can I supply some further info? I've trawled through the IPAQ reference guide and done all it says there to set up the WLAN, and it does seem to give the indications, just no actual browsing or internet access.

G'day Nick,

Can't even ping? Do you have a firewall on your PC? I had to disable mine to get a connection.

Hey Bryan, many thanks!! That seemed to work.

I had turned off the XP firewall, but forgot that I had also installed ZoneAlarm. Turning that off, and a few re-boots later, I can now ping from the pda to my laptop, and ActiveSybc even works now.

Next step? Well, obviously the Internet connection to allow browsing/email etc.

I have tried both ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) check boxes, for the modem in the laptop and Wireless Network connection. I would have thought it was the modem one I would make shared. However, when I did thaht, I seemed to lose the wireles connection altogether between pda and laptop. Also, I have checked under the ActiveSync on the laptop under Tools menu to allow Through Internet access.

At the moment, I am getting the dreaded "Page not found" for my pda web browsing.

Thanks again for the tip so far

Do you have a wireless LAN router? What's IP address? Remember, ICS will use 192.168.0.1, and if other device uses the same address you'll have problems.

No router, just the laptop connected to the Internet. Laptop is connected through wireless link to PDA.

Would a router be needed? I'm not much of a networking expert, as you can see....

What about keys? I've read other forum entries where the keys have to be in HEX or something like this... David Hettel posted something about this. Have a good look around and you'll find it.

Have a look in this thread and see if it helps.

Sorry Nick. Can't help you with Internet access.

Problem is I've been bitten twice when browsing without a firewall enabled. Unless I can find out what ports/services I need to allow for in my firewall setup to maintain the wireless connection, I'm not going to expose my PC just so I can browse with my PDA.

I know this might not be an option for some, but I've a router with built in firewall. Much more efficient than running a personal firewall software.

First is one less thing running on my computer. Second, the firewall is on firmware, and if there's a buffer overflow exploit the most I'll have to do is restart the router. On my computer it can crash the stack and execute something.

Because I don't usually install anything on my machines without running in a separate box I don't have to worry about applications "calling home". I do have an antivirus running, though and I run AdAware every couple of days.

Personal firewalls cause all sort of problems, and they're installed in a very sensitive area of the OS. I had to rebuild one of my machines twice because of Symantec's LiveUpdate causing so much damage that I couldn't log into the machine afterwards.
