Trying to get my IPAQ 2210 to connect to the internet using my mpx220 as a modem over either bluetooth or Irda. I can use the phone's own internet explorer but would like to use the IPaq occasionally with its bigger screen. I know the vodafone ireland passwords etc and have checked the forums and tried all the various postings. I had no trouble with my old SE T610 but have upgraded my phone!

Anyone got any ideas please?

Hi There,
Try these settings and let me know if they work:

1. Click on Start , Select “Settings” and click on the “Connections Tab” at bottom of screen

2. Select on the “Connections” icon

3. Select “Add a new modem connection”

4. Enter appropriate name for the Connection

5. Select “Bluetooth Dialup modem”

6. In the Phone number field enter ( *99# ) and click on "use dialing rules"

7. Tick the "use dialing rules" box and select "edit"

8. Select Dialling Patterns and enter a single “G” for each of the three options and select on OK three times and click "next"

9. Enter ISP username (vodafone) and password (vodafone) and select "advanced"

10. Set Baud rate to Maximum (115200)

11. Untick "wait for dial tone before dialing"

12. Enter the Extra Dial string ( +CGDCONT=1,"IP","isp.vodafone.ie" ) and click on OK and then Finish

Pairing nokia 6310i with pocketPC 2003

1. Click on Start, select "settings" and click on the "System" tab and select "Bluetooth"

2. Click on "Turn on" and select "Bluetooth manager"

3. Select "new" and select "Connect"

4. Select "Connect to the internet" and click "next"

5. Select "Connect via a dialup device" and click "next"

6. Select "Tap here to choose a device" and allow detection of devices

7. Select your phone from the list and select "Finish"

8. Select the connection you made above and a connection will be made to the phone

9. Accept the connection on the phone and enter a passkey e.g. 1234 and press ok

10. Enter the same passkey on the pocketpc device when prompted.

Instead of manually creating the connection you can have it created by the Bluetooth Wizard. Follow this guide for this, and use the Init String IRLwirelessdude posted.

I appreciate the help.

One question:

The connection wizard seems to want to use a country code and area code and if I blank them it uses a default country code in the dial up number of 1. So the number looks like this:

+1 *99#

I presume this is wrong. What is the workaround please?

Anyway, the Ipaq seems to dial the right number but I still get the "cannot connect for an unknown reason...." message.

The pairing is fine so the Ipaq and the phone connect but that's as far as I get with either bluetooth or Irda.

AAAAAARGH

Hi There,
I actually work for VF IRL and if you use the guide that i posted if will negate this.
The key is the Dialling Patterns. This needs to be set to the single"G" in each option otherwise the local and area codes will be added to the dummy GPRS *99# number.

Could I have something wrong in my phone settings?

What should I enter in the WAP and Internet settings in the phone (all works fine for Internet Explorer on the phone though)?

Vodafone's official response was "We don't plan to introduce that phone here..." (so, get lost and buy one of our rubbish ones we have surplus from the U.K. because no-one wants them any more there).

Thanks for helping

Try connecting to this number 0876202222 with username and password both set to vodafone and see does this work. This is the VF IRL dial-up number and will show connectivity from the IPAQ thru the phone out onto our network. If it doesn't connect using this then there is an issue between the phone and IPAQ as regards connectivity. If you are using BT try using and IRDA connection. As regards the GPRS connection might also be an option to try this number *99***1#.

Let me know how you get on.

Your help is much appreciated.

I decided to give up and use the Irda modem which I got working thanks to your settings.

To be fair the manual doesn't state that it is possible to link up this phone as a bluetooth modem although some seem to have got it to work.

I wonder why VF aren't helpful through official channels though, it's obvious the expertise exists in the organisation.

thanks again

ashleey: +1 *99#

I presume this is wrong. What is the workaround please?
A workaround is this: after creating the connection through the Bluetooth wizard, tap Start | Settings, change to Connections tab.

On Connections change to Advanced tab, tap the Select Location button. Make sure to uncheck the Use Dialing Rules box.

Your Pocket PC should now dial *99#.

Also, try *99***1#, and so on up to *99***4#. Each 1 - 4 is a connection configured on your MPx220. It should be using the default connection, unless it was manually changed, so it's worth a try.

Leave the Init String empty. If it doesn't work try Z;+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet.vodafone.ie". The Z; is a reset command.

Thanks for helping. I'll stick with my Infra red set up now I've got it work (with the help of this forum) and IRLWirelessDude.

I found if I change a bluetooth partnership (I currently have unpaired it from mypda) in any way on my mpx220 then I need to delete and recreate the partnership between my mpx220 and my pc for bluetooth activesync.

I reckon the bluetooth software on the mpx220 is not as reliable as that on the pc or the pda, but would need to be an expert to delve into it.

What are the chances/requirements of getting my mpx220 software updated like all the U.S. customers are doing?

Thanks again

Hi Ashleey,
Try this place www.mprc.ie
They are based Sandyford Ind Est in Dublin.
They would be the best place in Ireland to see if there is a F/W upgrade available for a phone.

Also if you need anything else for connection on the VF IRL network for CSD/HSCSD/GPRS/3G just throw it up here and i'll answer it if i can.
As regards VF IRL support normally the frontline guys only support phones that have officially been passed by the Terminals Dept internally.
However most phones have more or less the same set up and generally only need minor set up tweaking to get them working. When you rang VF did they xfer you to Data Support?

I e-mailed them, but I shouldn't be too harsh as I did set it up myself without too much bother by copying and adjusting settings from my T610.

I suppose I just fancied a rant about the price of handsets here compared to Vodafone U.K (I am English and travel back and forth so can see the difference).

All mobile phone co.s explain higher margins in Ireland and that ARPU is higher in Ireland because people make more calls here. So why do they subsidise the handsets more and provide a better range in the U.K.? Competition? Cartels?etc...

Anyway, I still think the bluetooth software is a bit suspect on the mpx220. Should have stuck with the sony. Suppose it backs up VF Ireland in not releasing this handset here.

Your point as regards a smaller range of handsets available in VF IRL is mainly due to the quality of the testing that the Terminals Dept does.
Most phones go thru at least 4 version's of f/w before they get approved whereas in the UK they normally test once and if anyway half decent it gets passed.
In the UK there are quite alot of product recalls due to this and also alot higher % of phones being swapped out due to them under performing.

That is fair enough, though the prices are still a bit scary for anyway half decent phone (if you are aged over 17, but I suppose that's the target market with eminem ringtones etc.)

Thanks for all your help though.

Just one question:

My smartphone is set up to access the web with all data connection settings on auto, using a voda internet data account to isp.vodafone.ie and a voda wap data account to live.vodafone.com.

I presume the phone just uses the internet account to access all sites including wap.

Would access to isp.vodafone.ie be priced per kb the same as live.vodafone.com?

Do I nees to specify a Primary DNS in the isp.vodafone.ie?(I have done as 213.233.128.1 and all works)

Thanks

To be honest the whole pricing area is something that i try to keep out of it. Don't need to know it on a day to day basis. As far as i know unless you are on a specific Data Package the price is 2cent per KB. Open to correction on this.
1907 cust care the best bet for this information.
