tried bluetooth for the 1st time today and ran into some problems.. i did read the various guides available but its still not working..

i have a ipaq h1940 bluetooth builtin
billionton bluetooth usb dongle.

i have 1 network card on my pc connected to my router to share my dsl connection. the IP of the router is 192.168.0.1. router assigns IP addresses through DHCP.

I have succesfully created an activesync connection, i can install programs and copy files to and fro.

i have also created a network connection which connects succesfully but thats it, i can't view the shared drives on my computer or can i visit websites, tried IP method too.

do i have to enable ICS anywhere as the guides hinted? if so, do i have to change the IP of my router?

what i'd like to do is access the internet (messenger etc) and stream my mp3s so i can connect the ipaq to my hifi. i'm guessing the 'network' feature will allow that?

cheers

You have to enable ICS and thus change your router from 192.168.0.1 to something else... And other parts of your network since they all use 192.168.0.x (I presume). But you can also change the PAN driver on your H1940 and enter the configuration manually using another range for Bluetooth only.

An alternative is to use the Winrouter Lite to do the routing stuff from your computer without having to use the 192.168.0.1 address range.

I don't have a HP WM 2003 around here to create the new guides - yet. I'm just now working with a Toshiba E750 2003, but the Bluetooth stack is different.

As soon as I arrange a HP iPaq I'll post the configuration for these.

thanks for the quick reply...

you mentioned...

"But you can also change the PAN driver on your H1940 and enter the configuration manually using another range for Bluetooth only."

if i was to enter the config manually, what range IP should i give it.. will 192.168.0.xx be okay? and for DNS do i put in the IP given to me by my ISP or something else??

thanks again

edit: atm i can 'surf' the net through activesync albeit really slow.

Yes... I'm not quite sure about the final configuration but what you suggested makes sense.

About the AS for surfing. Yep, it works, but as you found out already is quite slow. You'll get around 3x the speed when connected via LAN.

Depending on the configuration, yes.

Actually there's streaming and "streaming". If you want true streaming, you can encode the output of a mp3 program and stream it from a server (Microsoft Windows Media Encoder will do it for you). Any computer connected to a LAN will be able to plug into the stream and play the contents. You don't have control of contents (unless you are on the host computer), but multiple clients can connect. In this case you have to wait only for the first bytes to buffer before the song starts playing.

The "streaming" most people use is simply connect to a share drive, and play a file from there. In this case the file is actually copied to your local computer (or Pocket PC) then played from there. It's removed after that. You have to wait until the file is copied.

There's a new article on Pocketpcthoughts with instructions on how to setup Windows Media Encode for this. I used this technique for a while a few months ago. Then I tried Helix Server (from Real), but the RealOne client on the Pocket PC is not compatible with the streaming (incredible their own products don't talk to each other) but the desktop player works fine from other computers.

i saw the pocketpcthoughts article, very interesting.. once i get my ipaq setup i will try it out..

is there a lot of overheard if you do the "streaming" method? ie just open the file over the network?

Nope. Just a little wait for the file to be copied. And will probably play better (and you'll have more control of what to play).

The guides you've pointed out have in essence the same content as the ones we have here (if you look in the H5450 guides, since the H22xx series uses the same Bluetooth stack and configuration as the old H5450).

Do you have a personal firewall? Perhaps blocking the share service ports?

no personal firewall, not blocking any ports.

just trying to view the shared drives of the computer with the bluetooth dongle connected to it.
