Hi All,

How many users have replaced the wired LANs in their homes and offices (not talking abt big companies, they've already gotten into wi-fi, jes the small personal businesses) with WLANs?
All those who have, do drop in a line here. Just wanna know how popular wi-fi's getting
I'm from India and the wi-fi scene is not that exciting here except for a few cities. I got a WLAN setup at my home a couple of months back and am jes loving the freedom..
I suggest u go 4 wamp. Its easy to install for newbies . bye

about 18 months ago i put an 802.11b system in, now i run a DLINK 802.11g.

Wouldnt be without it....

I have a Wireless router at home (Belkin), but I wouldn't say big companies are adopting the wireless - I worked for a rather large one (> 500 people in New Zealand) and they had explicit in the policy that Wireless AP were not to be connected to their network.

I've been running wifi for around 4-5 years now - lived in apartments so no choice really unless you want to sit in the kitchen with your PC.

Have to agree re big company's most are scared of wireless and have policy's to stop it being used. However I have installed wifi for a small number of smaller business lately, I dont think they are so worried about the security side of things so long as best practise is followed and its locked down as much as possible.

I don't broadcast my SSID and I use MAC authentication. I noticed around my house I could see at least 5 SSID's. I think business is warming to WiFi after the scare war driving created a few years back. A couple of years ago I walked through the city mapping AP's and I couldn't believe how many were insecure or had weak encryption.

It can be frustrating setting up WiFi when you can see another AP on the same channel.

There are boatloads of unsecure APs around Hawkes Bay.

A homeless geek with a PDA and a solar powered charger would have a good life here...

I use an Apple wireless base station (with my existing D-link DSL modem) for my Powerbook and IBMT41.
It's protected and when I am not using it I just simply switch off the power.
