Hi strange question i guess.

does anybody know of a tutorial of building a router from scratch. i.e. the schematics for the logic board etc and software needed to program it. basicly wana build a router as a project. I have had a google but come up with nothing

I know its a long shot because the companies that make this stuff would keep it a secret as they spend alot of money designing this stuff.

A layer 3 router is just like any other computer you have a microprocessor that runs software which can inspect ip packets and route accordingly. A router would only need two nics, a processor (and whatever else goes with that e.g. RAM, ROM for operational instruction storage). The power comes in the software that makes the decisions.

Maybe look @ some embedded routing systems like those available for pfsense to get an idea in terms of hardware?

I doubt you'll find schematics for the logic board, but have a look at ALIX boards by PC Engines. Coupled with software such as Monowall or Pfsense its the closest to what you want to do.

If you have a look around some of the main chip vendors, like Thompson, Philips(NXP), Atheros, Broadcom, Conexant etc you will find SOC (system on Chip) solutions which most of the vendors use most of which are ARM or MIPs based, many will give app notes if you want.

But as mentioned above, have a look at MikroTik Router boards, there you will get a suitable solution at board level with software and development tools to create your own router, with mPCI slots for Wireless adons etc.
