Hi there,

I've got a really simple question that I cannot seem to find the answer to anywhere on the net - articles get close but not close enough!

I'm wanting to use my internet connection that is available on my laptop from my PocketPC. I have currently done this via Bluetooth and ActiveSync but want to know if it's possible without using ActiveSync as that requires synchronising FIRST before I get access to the net?

I've got an HP HW6510 (iPAQ) PocketPC (uses Win2003SE). It has Bluetooth built in.

I have Windows XP Pro SP2 running on my IBM Thinkpad Laptop, which also has Bluetooth built-in.

I can see when I go to Bluetooth Manager on the PocketPC that there is a choice for "Connect to a network" - can I use this? If so, how?

Please help if you can!

Welcome to Geekzone... Your only option via Bluetooth is to continue using the Activesync connection, since the Windows XP SP2 Bluetooth software can not act as a server for Bluetooth connections.

Another option is to use the original software distributed with this Bluetooth adapter, if it supports the appropriate profiles (most Widcomm and BlueSoleil do).

Hey there,

Thanks for the really quick reply - I thought that might be the case.

So I guess I've go to try and work out what/how the software for the Bluetooth adapter works on my ThinkPad - it's internal Bluetooth and not a separate adapter that I've purchased.

The software used it "Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator" and "IBM Integrated Bluetooth III"

If this is an internal adapter then your option is really use the software already installed. Other software will probably not be compatible and may cause your Bluetooth to stop working altogether.

Hi there,

Well, I don't know how useful you thought your post would be ... but you'd be surprised! hehe. I've had the ThinkPad a good long while now, and tried so many times to set Bluetooth up but this time I've got it! There is a known issue with BT and ThinkPads and SP2 - in that when you install the BT, it also installs the Microsoft Enumerator ... and you can only use one of them, as the MS will stop the ThinkPad BT stack functioning properly.

I've removed both, re-installed teh ThinkPad BT and it now works!

However, I've added the Bluetooth Network "My Network Access" under My Bluetooth Places (something I never had before) and I can discover then add this service from the PDA, but then I cannot use this new service to browse the web from my device.

If I look on my top bar on the PDA, I see:

And clicking it shows "Connectivity", "The Internet" (Network Card) but when I try to browse the internet using IE on the device, I am getting DNS errors.

Any ideas? I'm sure one of the numerous other forum posts will guide me I'm just not sure.

What happened there is normal - is not a bug, but the OS decided which driver to use, and in general it chooses the native one. You could have changed drivers by manually assigning the driver to the hardware (we have a thread about this).

Glad it worked for you. The problem with removing the native driver that if the new driver doesn't work, the old one is no longer in the system, and the only way to install the native driver is to install SP2 again.

Anyway, for your browsing... It will depend on how you connected. Using LAP you need to establish ICS on your laptop. Using PAN you need to use Bridge on your laptop. It will also depend on what Bluetooth software you are running now - is it Widcomm or BlueSoleil?

Hi there,

The "IBM Integrated Bluetooth Software" is a rebadged Widcomm stack.

I think I'm going down the ICS route at the moment but I don't know what LAP stands for ... but ...

here's the problem - ICS requires that I use 192.168.0.1 for the network card. in my office I have a Netgear router which uses IP 192.168.0.1 and on client site, there's no way I can fix my laptop's IP address so I assume that means ICS is out of the question?

So do you think I could use PAN? If so, which is the guide for this? I'd like to give it a go - provided it works with my laptop setup and my HP HW6510 I'd love it!

AN ADDITION TO THIS HAVING FOUND YOUR GUIDE ON ICS/PAN !!

You are correct, ICS is out of question in this case. The PAN configuration requires a Bridge to be created between the network card and the Bluetooth adapter. Also, the configuration on the Bluetooth software must be changed to be "Allow Network Access" instead of "Allow Private Network":

The network configuration on the Pocket PC (if using a Widcomm based software on the Pocket PC) should be similar to this.

I'm really sorry to reply again but I'm getting a little lost/confused/something here :-)

Is one of the many great articles/guides for setting up PAN?

And how do I setup this bridge between the PAN (that I haven't yet setup) and the network?

I'm sorry to trouble you again - i thought I was nearly there, and now, having removed everything as it was something I could never use (needing a fixed IP address), I am starting from scratch.
