Hey there,

I need help setting up my Linksys WRT54G router on the Orcon network (if that is even possible). I am connecting it up to the supplied modem from Orcon which is a single wired connection NetComm NB14. I have set the modem up correctly using the supplied information from Orcon and it has been set up using PPPOA settings, It works fine on the internet. But when i go to set up the Linksys router there are no options to set up PPPOA, just static ip, PPPOE, etc.

I am inquiring as to whether or not i can set up this router using the the current modem configuration or if i can change the modem configuration to a static ip, as i can easily set up the router this way as i have done so with the same router on Telstra Cable.

Any help or info would be much appreciated.

As you have found the Linksys router isn't dsl capable.

The easiest option would be to determine the NetComm routers IP address (ie 192.168.0.1) and then set the Linksys IP (ie 192.168.0.254) and disable the DHCP server in the Linksys.

Once you have done that you can plug the ethernet cable from the NetComm into one of the LAN ports on the Linksys. This will mean that the IP addresses will be assigned by the NetComm and the Linksys will be basically transparent on your network.

Another option is setting up the NetComm in "Half-Bridge" mode, but I'm unsure whether the NetComm supports this option. Someone else may be able to give pointers on this alternative method.

Hey thanks for the reply. Does it matter if both the ip addresses for the router and the modem's are exactly the same if i am to try the first method?

Apologies for the double post. I successfully managed to follow the first method I just changed the router ip to 192.168.1.2 so it has a unique ip to the modem. Thanks a bunch for that method I would never have thought of it. Apart from losing one LAN port to the modem are there any downsides to this alternative approach? What does disabling the DHCP setting do? Also will it make gaming on my xbox 360 a problem, i.e will i have problems with having a 'Strict NAT'?

Basically you have two routers, PPPoA can't be (fully) bridged easily like PPPoE can (PPPoE is used commonly overseas but in NZ we went with PPPoA like the UK).

This means you either need to setup the 2nd router in wan bypass mode (which you have done now) or you can do PPPoA half bridging but the modem needs to have this option (not all do).

In wan bypass the netcomm does the dhcp and nat, in half bridging the linksys would do it.

There is no major downside other than the loss of a lan port.

If the 2nd router (linksys in your case) had more advanced features (QoS, access restrictions, bandwidth monitoring etc) it might be worth trying to get a half bridge setup working but if it's just the stock WRT54G it's probably not worth the hassle.
