Hello
quick question
my current ISP is slingshot and just wondering why am getting same IP address (even after restart of the pc).I thought unless you sign up for static Ip you get dynamic address ,why not here?

with my previous ISP provider (telstra) i dont have this issue. how do i get dynamic address always?
thanks for the advise.

That's interesting...don't ISP usually allocate dynamic IP by default? Maybe it's just chance that you're allocated the same IP?

Just out of curiosity, you restart your PC, but did you restart your modem/router? Or are you on dialup?

It is your modem that holds the lease for the dynamic IP so restartig your PC will have no effect. If you switch off your modem for long enough you will get a new IP.. I'm not sure exactly how long is required though.

Ah...right...now I assume you're talking about your PC's LAN IP? That has nothing to do with your ISP. Assuming you have not set your PC to use static IP then it is allocated by your router's DHCP server. I am a bit fuzzy on this but I think you can set the lease time for your DHCP server.

if its lease time causing the issue, why same router gives different results for different ISPs?

Right...enough of making assumptions. Which IP address are you talking about? Your external (WAN) IP address? or LAN? How are you checking this IP address?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

i use http://www.whatismyip.com/

issue is , i use megavideo website to watch videos but on free account it lets you watch only 70mins at one time. i found on the internet that if you restart router you can continue to watch.

this worked nicely for me until i switched to slingshot the other week :o(

In that case you're checking for your WAN IP. Unless your PC is some super-duper device with built-in ADSL modem then rebooting it means nothing. As per earlier reply by dannyres if your modem is off long enough it may get a new address. Otherwise it all depends on ISP's settings AFAIK - I'm no expert on that side of things - others may be able to comment. Perhaps ask in the Slingshot forum? or ring them? I'm not sure if ISP's allocation of IP addresses run on similar principle as DHCP IP lease...

At home I have a Telstra broadband account and that came with a static IP by default. Not sure why. So it can happen on other networks too #justsaying :) ... although my colleague had to pay extra for a static IP address with his Vodafone broadband account.

Is your Telstra broadband cable? or ADSL? I think the former comes with static IP, the latter with dynamic...but don't quote me on that :)

Very different things. TelstraClear cable service is always static IP.

DSL services are mostly dynamic by default. If there are not enough modems recycling you might get the same address. Or to make things easier they might have a policy to only assign a new IP if your lease expires, otherwise you get the same. Who knows?

TelstraClear cable definitely comes with a static IP so you can be quoted on that :)
