Hey there,

As you can see - I am new here, so go easy on me. I just got an eMac for next to nothing... Unfortuantely, it does not have an Airport card, meaning it is wired only. I have a spare router (DSE XH1169) Lying around, and I was wondering if I could use it to as a repeater, or the like, then plug the Mac into an ethernet port... If only I could figure out how. Can anyone out there give me some help?

PS. My main router is a Thomson TG585 v7

If you currently have that Thomson unit I think it has a 4-port switch, doesn't it? Connect your "eMac" (or do you mean iMac?) to one of those. Unless I'm mistaken about the Thomson of course...

From what you are saying what you want to do is connect spare router to your new mac and use it as a wireless receiver to your wifi (different router right?). So what you want to know is can the spare wifi router receive Wifi and then you access it via the ethernet.

The answer is no a router doesnt receive wifi just sends it out, you dont have to buy an airport card you could buy a different brand as long as the drivers support your Mac

Edit: Over-simplified for the benefit of the OP, dont jump at me saying Wifi does receive

If you didn't find some settings for repeater type function, then I guess it can't do it or its too hard to setup. You cant run an ethernet cable to the other room?

Time to find a new industry!

Er no, some wifi APs can act as repeaters and/or bridges. (So you can connect one AP to another)

Hi there,
Is ok lol look the easiest thing u can do is go buy a Belkin wireless USB adapter that will give u wireless computer.

Figured out how to do it :#).

Bridge mode on the DSE router and the Thomson attatched to the Mac. And to those who said, it's impractical to run cables or have the computer in a different room.

Umm...geez...it's probably just me but I'm confused what it is you're trying to achieve...

Some Wireless modems can do that, i think its called WDS or some think. But yes it is properly easier to just buy a usb wifi card what works with the mac. But if it saves money if you already have a spear wifi router for all means go for it.
