Is it possible to use my current USB adapter that I got when I purchased my Microsoft Bluetooth keyboard and mouse or do I have to go out and buy another adapter in order to communicate with my mobile phone?

The Microsoft adapter does not currently (Windows XP Service Pack 1) the required profiles for some actions, like synchronisation or network access. You'll have dial-up and HID only.

Microsoft is planning an update on Windows XP Service Pack 2 that will add other profiles.

You can however use the Microsoft mouse and keyboard with other adapters that support newer driver versions. Have a look on this review for an example. Note that on that review I was using a beta version from TDK and this is not released yet. DLINK, MSI and others have updated drivers.
