Hi,

I am having problems with my router dropping its ppp connection. My computer is connected by wire to the router, and there are 3-4 laptops in the house connected through wireless.

At first I thought it was random but it appears to happen any time a wireless user tries to connect to certain websites. So far it has only happened with tvnz.co.nz, but I assume there are others. Apart from that the connection is fine, with low latency and error rate.

My ISP says they can see a fault from their end, but have no idea what it is. I wanted to try troubleshoot it first before I risk paying for the technician to look at it. Trouble is I have no idea where to start on this one.

Can anyone help me with this? Or help me troubleshoot it, as this problem is a little out of my league.

I have a RTA1025WE router, firmware upto date, tried factory reset.

What path does a command prompt tracert give you when you check the path to tvnz.co.nz?

C:\> tracert tvnz.co.nz

Are you using DHCP to allocate IP addresses to you computers?
Is the DHCP pool correctly set up for DNS and default gateway?

Are you using the ISP's given DNS server(s)?

You can check the DNS name lookup for a given web site using the following nslookup command

C:\> nslookup tvnz.co.nz nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn

Where nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn is the DNS server IP address you are using.

when you check the IP address of your PC, is the DNS server it displays, the one the ISP is forwarding via your ADSL2 connection?

C:\> ipconfig/all

The IP address 12.129.193.242 appears to be an unregistered network in the AT&T network, so yes that would be a problem.

Is 192.168.1.0/24 (192.168.1.1-254) the ONLY network you have configured on your ADSL2 modem?

Are you using a Virtual Private Networks (VPN) or something.

Just a few things to consider when you say the link status/bandwidth is fine.

Do you have any wireless settings in the router that use some kind of advanced function? I'm thinking something like QoS that interacts with other parts of the system, and also uses the routers CPU alot more. I ended up setting my old router's QoS to a % priority to avoid crashing it whenever there was heavy traffic going through. I'm thinking this because TVNZ has some high bandwidth content there.
