Hi folks. I am looking at buying the 7" version of Kindle HD for my mother in law who can then Skype (video) with my wife. She is currently in NZ so was thinking of buying this, setting up a Skype account for her and then she can take it back to her country and all is well.

Doing some searches online, it's not clear whether the Skype app comes pre-installed on it or you have to download it from the amazon app store. Which is true? Is it possible to access the Amazon app store in NZ via some hack/rooting so some free apps that are on the offer can be downloaded to it?

Going to use YouShop and GZ's Amazon link OR I might just buy it from TradeMe cause it's only $320. If I buy the ad supported version, will it matter if it's operated outside NZ? Don't really care whether ad's show up or not.

Only want the tablet for Skype and nothing else. Looked at Nexus 7 but then figured that Kindle HD has an officially supported and and custom developed app from Skype itself and video calling quality is good. Nexus 7 version of Skype had complaints of poor quality audio/video prob because it's not meant for the 7" tablet?

Thanks.

Skype preinstalled on KF:

Probably not difficult to use a vpn service if update is needed.

Thanks. Mother in law is clueless with computers. Forget VPN setup for her! Will also have to arrange for someone to go to her house and setup Wif-fi! Windows 8 tablets and iPad will do the job fine but too expensive for a solution where she is only ever going to use Skype and that too couple of times a week.

I think, I will go with the kindle fire HD and cross my fingers about non updated Skype app on it working for quite sometime.
