Almost anywhere you want to travel out of NZ is far away, so being able to travel with good gadgets to take the sting off of long hauls is a must.

For me the must have gadgets are:

In ear headphones and ear-plugs that keep out the noise. I love my Shure SCL4-K in ear headphones
Inflatable pillow to make it more comfortable to sleep on the plane.
iPad so that I can have my own favourite or want-to-see movies without depending on whats available on the plane, as well as reading books, listening to music and reading my favourite magazines.
2 x 6600 mAh rechargeable battery pack to recharge devices on the way to my destination
Travel adapter for power plugs, so I can plug in my many devices that need charging when I have reached my foreign destination
Outlet extender, so I can charge lots of devices from one power plug

For my old iPhones (4 and 4S) I used an active GSP dock from Tomtom, and I have both western europe and NZ maps on my iPhone, works a charm. Carrying a GPS with maps for where you are have been very helpful.

Lots of chargers, almost feel like a full out operation setting up all the equipment sometimes, I am not very good a traveling light, and need to carry my laptop for work wherever I am.

I prefer to travel light. Just backpacked around Europe for over 7 weeks with no electronics except for my Motorola Atrix.

That said, I would've preferred something slightly bigger, and a web browser that didn't keep crashing. Maybe something like a Galaxy Note.

Tardis. Alternatively my laptop. Kids play with my wife's Notion Inc. Adam (older Android tablet with Pixel Qi transflective display, works in direct sunlight).

Samesies, I just take my keyboard Kindle loaded with books I want to read. The battery still sits at ~1 month with the wireless off and a USB/power adapter is normally available in case I need to charge.

I travel often, mostly domestic but occasionally international and (as long as I am travelling without family) with carry on luggage only:
1. My Kathmandu day pack, carry on size and can store my kit plus clothes for a week.
2. iPad, Logitech ultra slim keyboard with non slip pads, NC over ear headphones - essential on the plane
3. Scottevest jacket (headphones installed) and pants - multiple pockets in each and the jacket will even take the iPad.
4. Win 8 Samsung Ativ S or iPhone 4S - I have not decided on a winner of these two yet.
5. Grid it - 1x10w 4 port USB charger, 3x retractable multi cables (Micro USB, mini USB, 30 pin iphone connector on each), audio jack splitter (to share your ipad with bored child, spouse, neighbour), spare retractable headphones, international power adapter, compressed cloths in a tube (just add water), 10w 2xUSB port car power adapter
6. 1x small paperback (for those stupid times when all electronics must be turned off)
7. toiletries - travel size: deodorant, toothbrush and paste, beard trimmer - no blade shaving for me
8. clothes - the last to pack and the least I can get away with, but use multi purpose items a lot, ie jacket is also vest with tuck away hood, pants are also shorts, shoes are black (slip ons for stupid airport security) that look dressy but are comfortable all day.

So what are your life saver gadgets for long travels?

Most of what you have above basically.

Over ear headphones, I used my Beats HD

Also a Fiio amp.

Ipad with movies and music, I upgraded to a 128GB version and with uploading all my photos, a few movies and my music I have about 20gb left.

Iphone - 32GB Iphone4 for just music.

I didn't use any external batteries as I made sure my airline had USB charging in every seat, Hawaiian does!

Inflattable pillow was awesome this trip, it is the first time I have bothered but worth it.

I picked up a travel adaptor that works all ways for $17 from Walmart, I also picked up an international 4 USB charger so I could charge the 2 Ipads, Iphone and the pocket amp.

In hindsight I should have taken a NZ 4 socket powerboard as I needed to charge multiple laptops, camera's etc at times.

Also when I arrive a AT&T or T-mobile sim card for phone and Ipad.

I don't know how many times and how much money having these saved me over 3 weeks.

I'm looking to replace my tired AirNZ (gift) noise cancelling headphones.

which works well on the sound system at home - but for travel am interested in noise cancelling wireless
headphones. I have seen a shout out on forums here +1 for the sennheiser mm 550-x and recent positive public review of the Logitech UE9000 http://ue.logitech.com/en-nz/headphones/ue9000

Both both of these are pricey and wondering if anyone else has found a good alternative - wireless noise cancelling headphones.

Noise cancelling headphones are an absolute must when flying.

If you've never flown with them you simply don't know what you're missing. Once you have flown with them you'll never hop on a plane without them!

Depending on how long I'm going away for I also normally take a multiboard. It saves needing multiple power adapters.
