A universal remote is a fantastic gadget. I have been a happy possessor of a Harmony One for years. I am still constantly amazed by all it can be made to do, and especially, by all the stuff I am able to keep cramming into it. I like to think I am fairly creative in the uses I keep finding for it, but I know there are others who are far more clever. So what does your remote control? Here is the run-down for mine:

My receiver is a Yamaha RX-V750. It is several years old and has no HDMI inputs but it still works well. I have standardised all audio inputs on s/pdif, switched by the Harmony. Other devices are the Sky decoder, DVR, Blu-Ray, UHF box, satellite receiver, TV, streaming pc, HDMI recorder, HDMI switch, HDCP stripper, another IR receiver, and a few additional peripherals. The Harmony controls everything. Each device is programmed into it, with the most useful functions assigned to the main buttons according to activity, but all other functions available on virtual buttons if needed.

At present there are nine activities. The remote switches audio inputs and settings and IR switches like the HDMI switch. In this way I can quickly flick between devices as well as controlling them individually. The streaming pc is a special case and it is the device I added most recently. It is controlled by a generic IR receiver that has been programmed into the Harmony database. Key presses are used to generate macros and keyboard shortcuts on the computer, using AutoHotKey. In this way the Harmony One can perform most functions, either directly from the hard buttons or via menus and virtual buttons, while the number keys at the bottom are used to control the mouse.

I think the Harmony One is a truly incredible device, although the on-line set-up software is unbelievably stupid to work with. I have no idea how many functions are currently in my unit’s database, but there must be hundreds, if not thousands. And they all work at the press of a button, every single time (well, almost, anyway). So what have the rest of you done with your universal remotes? Is my example typical or am I barely scratching the automation surface?

I have had a Logitech Harmony remote before, but find I like things getting simpler.. So I am very happy that the Apple TV4 remote now lets me turn on the TV, change volume on my Denon receiver, and control the Apple TV4. Most of the time thats all I need these days, because 99.9% of what we are watching is on the Apple TV.

Still have to use the TV remote to get to the smart-tv apps on the TV to watch TVNZ, but when they (sometime in a distant future, hopefully before the sun turns into a red giant) get the TVNZ app available for Apple TV, I won't need any other remotes :)

Well I actually use my Harmony to do the ATV also, I love how it can be programmed to switch on the (smart) TV, select the correct HDMI channel, nudge the ATV awake (menu button press programmed) and then even select NetFlix position on the menu all with one button press!

Also programmed is to wake both Rv and DVD player and start playing a disk that may have been left in to save its 'place' in the story for my kids. I do love the ATV3's default remote, for style and simplicity, but rarely ever use it TBH.

So my Harmony is currently programmed to control 3x TVs, projector, 2xATV3s, DVD/blue ray, sky box (almost never, just sub'd to get the 'free' sat dish installed cheaper tbh) and the HDMI switch.

Only other control I actually use is the Remote app on my phone to control the ATV's when I can't find the remote at time (very young sons idea of a game with Dad 🙈)

Love the harmony remotes. I have a Harmony smart hub in another room where all of my source equipment lives feeding in wall/ceiling speakers and a TV in the lounge. I currently control TV, DishTV Freeview PVR (With Freeview plus for ondemand), Amazon Fire TV, HTPC (Mediaportal) and an AVR. Plan on getting a Logitech Smart Keyboard that will also work via the smart hub so I can have keyboard and mouse access from the other room.

Last update I heard there was it was in the hands of the Apple Gods (paraphrased). I took that to mean it was awaiting approval to go live in the App store.
