I know these will never be up to the quality of the dedicated VR Headsets but what are they like?

I've got this in an email from Ascent;

http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?itemID=436334

I've thought about buying the Samsung VR headset to go with my S7 but thought $200 is a bit steep for a bit of fun.

Do you have any others that you have used?  I guess Google Cardboard would be at the low end of the scale but for under $55 these seem okay.

The quality can come remarkably close to the full blown headsets,

Mainly because of the resolution being very high on high end smartphones like the S7, and the displays being fairly low persistence.

However they will never be able to push/shade as many polygons as a fully blown gaming PC, or have as accurate (low delay) head tracking as the fully dedicated sensor array the 'real' headsets use.

Wish I had seen that deal before I ordered a google cardboard from trademe yesterday morning.

At $10 that deal is around $4 cheaperthan I paid for a cardboard box!

Oh well - I just bought it to have a play - at least the google cardboard can mostly be recycled when I get (card)board with it.laughing

I've used heaps of mobile phone headsets and the Samsung Gear VR is easily the best.  You can pick them up for around $100 on TradeMe and are well worth the money compared to cardboard and it's variants.

Done deal.   Ordered :)

Me too. Prepared to write off $10!

Their web site is a challenge, though. Sometimes pages just won't load.

Did anyone receive theirs?

I have a feeling it might be a scam, why would they sell something for less than the shipping cost?

I know what you mean!

According to the tracking data the parcel is on it's way;

  • 2016-08-23 09:31 The item is on transport to the country of destination
  • 2016-08-21 15:11 The item is at the PostNL sorting center
  • 2016-08-16 03:31 The item is pre-advised

Still hopeful cool

Well the payment page is really flaky, I managed to complete the payment process on a second try(1st order disappeared and dumped me to homepage) to "DD4UKECOMLIN" though the dd4 website now shows TWO orders awaiting payment (lol!)

TBH More worried about what they could do with my CC info than weather the $10 is "worth it" 😆

Mines still in the sorting centre:

Package Status: In Transit
Destination Country: New Zealand
Origin Country: Netherlands
2016-08-25 20:11 The item is at the PostNL sorting center
2016-08-22 03:42 The item is pre-advised

Mine arrived yesterday and I had great fun playing last night.  The BT remote is fiddly - you need to have it in the right "mode" otherwise it all goes to pot.  Little hint - set the mode as you turn it on.

I don't know if it's the same version that Ascent was selling or a knock-off but it works and for me.  Was very disappointed when my battery eventually drained on my phone.

Have fun :)

I've had play with an oculus drift, that was connected to footage from SnapIt-HD hemispherical camera

You look around the spatial area the camera had recorded as if you were standing there.

Visually very immersive, but made me feel seasick.
