I need some help with a Raspberry Pi 3 although the same issue seems to be in all models.

Basically, I want to get audio from the 3.5mm audio out socket into a pair of powered laptop speakers.

The issue I have is that I can only get audio using a 4-segment plug and all the speakers I have seen are only 3-segment.

I have tested this using some earphones from various cellphones, the 4-segment ones that include a mi work ok but the 3-segment ones that dont have a mic do not.

I am going to have to hunt for a 4-segment to 3-segment adaptor or is there some other way?

Thanks.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

3 pole plugs work fine in all mine? They just short out the composite video output which is disabled anyway when there is HDMI plugged in.

There are 2 wirings of the 4 pole plugs, so any adapter you get may be wired wrong. It seems the 4 pole to 3 RCA plugs are the worst at being wrong. the ground is swapped with the video output so you get bad audio on those ones.

If you are after quality audio, forget the 3.5mm socket tho, it sounds pretty bloody horrible. There are cheap i2s boards for the pi all over aliexpress as well as nice cases to put them in.

I got part way thru that, then the chromecast audio became a thing which just works (mostly) so I gave up on the idea.
