I need to buy a new timer plug for something so I thought I should go with a smart plug, as I may ant to control it remotely in the future. The only one I've seen at a sensible price is the TP-Link smart plug - are there any others around? Has anyone used the TP-Link one?

A guy at work has one of the tp link ones I think. He's not overly techincal, but thinks it's pretty good. Obviously it's tied to the tp link cloud...so I;m unsure if there's local control if there cloud is down, and/or any security issues that make arise for a cloud connected device.

But it's one of the mainstream available devices (ie nz brick and mortar store) that is certified. There are zwave ones, but when they're about $100 + the controller (another $100) + software, it's not a great option for a one off.

I have used the TP-Link power plugs, they work well with the TP-Link software but I had issues with the Google Home integration, they kept dropping off and had to be reset.

I got the cheaper TP-Link (they sell 2 different versions) on special about two weeks ago from Noel Leeming when they had them down to $40. It seems to work well with Alexa - just download the Kasa app for your phone and integrate it into Alexa Skills.

TP-link one works great, and has never dropped off like others have suggested.

Took advice from someone here and and bought two Orvibo ones - total waste of money.

TP-link for me here also. More stable than Wemo. $38 from Noel Leeming was a sharp price!

I’m looking at getting WiFi plugs to able able to turn on an amp or two remotely; Google Home support is critical.

It seems most people can get the TP Link HS100s working with Google Home so I’m looking at these, but I’m also wondering whether any of the Chinese-sourced plugs (EBay, Ali) are viable but cheaper alternatives. Here’s an example, noting one advantage is it’s also much more compact than those available here:

For anyone in the Wellington region I have 6-8 Belkin Wemo smart plugs and 2-3 Elgato Eve Energy switch's. Open to any offers as they are sitting unused.

I have some brand new TP-Link HS100 ($40 each x3) & HS110 ($50 each x3) units if anyone is interested.
Still in their sealed boxes.

I thought I would use them myself but haven't found a need for them.

Thanks for that, @peejayw - can you confirm if they work well with Google Home? (I know the listing says they are compatible, but I'm not particularly trusting of eBay descriptions!)

Are there any risks or problems associated with buying such devices as opposed to the say the TP-Link units?
