We need a smart door lock, but not sure of the best solution available in NZ?

Requirements:

- Ability to unlock the door remotely from iPhones.

- Prefer it to also provide regular key access.

- Rather not have a numerical keypad on the door for people to guess at.

- Don't want an illegal Z-wave frequency solution.

- Preferably someone offers physical lock installation services (Wellington).

- Basic lock functionality needs to work even if WiFi connection is lost ie: Physical Key.

- Reasonably attractive appearance.

Nice to haves:

- Ability for someone to leave a message that is sent to our iphones or something similar.

-  2-way communications between door and us remotely.

- Integration with IFTTT, Homekit and/or Google Home.

- Door unlocks as we approach with our iphones.

Any ideas?

I have a Nuki at my place - think it ticks all your requirements and all but the first 2 nice-to-haves.

https://nuki.io/en/

It works with existing mortice locks, so from the outside looks and works like a standard lock, i.e. a key will still open it.

I don't use the app as I have it integrated with openHAB so control it via that on my phone.

I installed our August Smartlock 3rd Gen + Connect Bridge yesterday in about 10 minutes. It definitely answers all your essentials, I also purchased the Pin Pad for it which allows me to generate codes for family/friends when required.

I believe with the doorbell add-on you can have the calling/messaging all in the single app, but I haven't purchased that as yet.

I considered the Pro version, but I don't want the US Z-Wave components and it meets all other requirements, it was considerably less than than the Nuki above looks to be (almost half the price). If purchasing through their website you will need to use a freight forward such as Youshop. otherwise I believe they deliver if purchased via Amazon. I spent a couple of months looking into the various options before settling on the August Smartlock Gen 3.

I backed one of these as they look to be pretty good. I like the simple design too.

I've got these as well. The range on the lock is really limited (I have the connect about 1.5m from the lock and the connection is listed as poor, but still works). I also need to replace the 4 x AA batteries about once every 2 months.

Definitely get the connect with the lock though. Due to the poor bluetooth range on the lock I used to find that I had to try to connect a couple of times from my phone before it was successful. Since the connect has this connection it's much quicker and the auto-unlock works so much better.

August GEN 3, Connect and keypad here also. I had the original August and the Gen 3 is a great upgrade. I recommend the package. It would be limited without the the connect and keypad.

Cheers, Matt

Are there any bricks and mortar suppliers of the August Smartlock kit in NZ?

Does Dick Smith count? Probably not. Amazon ships direct but no retailers that I know of.

Thanks Matt. I guess that would have made things too easy. I'll keep working on the CFO. Cheers!

Assa Abloy stock the Yale keyless range. Mostly keypads though, so possibly not what you're after.

You can get the Yale stuff from Mitre10, Bunnings and PBTech.

I just bought a Yale one from Amazon since it was nigh on impossible to get the Zigbee module locally.

We have a Danalock with zwave (Aus-NZ) integrated into Home Assistant.

Needed to replace the euro cylinder for the smart lock to fit but these can be be purchased together.

@WellingtonBoy - what lock do you have present? Deadbolt or euro cylinder?

Where did you purchase the AUS/NZ compatible Danalock? Do you have to use their cloud services?

I bought mine from https://www.smart-lock.co.nz . It took a week or so to arrive (from Aus) and about 30mins to install. It's the Zwave enabled one and I have it integrated with a Hubitat Elevation hub > MQTT > Home Assistant. The lock can be locked/unlocked through Zwave (HA or hub dashboard) or Bluetooth. To setup the lock, the Danalock app needs to be installed onto a mobile device. Virtual keys can be sent to people by sending an invitation within the app.

The downsides with the app that we've come across;

  • The master account holder i.e. the person that sets up the lock, is the only person that can send invites.
  • There's only permanent or temporary access with invitees. Temporary access is only within a date range. It would've been handy to provide access only for a certain period every week, e.g. every Friday.

However, options are limited when trying to find a Aus/NZ Zwave enabled smart lock which supported euro cylinders.

Ok cool, but I can skip the app entirely once I've done the setup? And just go through HA.

I don't currently have a deadbolt at all but my options have been limited based on the high of a lot of the backplates for smartlocks as they then overlap with the window in the door.

I'm currently thinking my options are limited to one's like danalock and August but I'm keen to limit my security concerns to just physical access as then it's probably easier for someone to break a window to get in anyway.

If you know of any other options I would love to know about them. I currently have a zwave network and pretty sure I'm going to get a few ZigBee solutions as well at some point.
