As a matter of preference I have never used a cell phone and I know nothing about them. Someone did give me one for Christmas several years ago but it stayed in a box until a trip to Thailand, when I thought it might come in handy for keeping in touch with my local host there. However, we could never get it to work with a Thai SIM card and after returning home, it went back in the box. Later I discovered that the original SIM card, from Spark, had gone missing. I'm not sure if I still have the Thai one or not.

I know that emergency calls can be made without credit. My question is if this also works without a SIM card, or at least a local one. The phone might be useful to have if it could be used to ring 111. Would this work?

Yes, even without a SIM you can make emergency calls. It does need battery charge and cell reception as well though...

No sim calls are not a thing on the local networks. Just get a prepay sim to run in it. I think they will still work when expired, but I am not about to go trying that for you.

Without a SIM card what network would it use?
You usually have to do something to select a network when you set the phone up.
Just interested in how this might work without a SIM.

@BlueShift Not correct in NZ you need a SIM card in the handset even if the SIM card has not got a number active on it

This was changed a number of years ago (about 10)
