My son has asked for a drone for Christmas, does anyone have any recommendations? Budget is ideally <$200 as there's every chance he'll break it or lose interest in it.

Had quick look on PBTech but other than a couple of $60 cheapies they rapidly jump up in price.

Not opposed to getting something off AliExpress if someone can recommend a brand or a model.

I have a Tello and it really is only just above toy status in my opinion. Really only good for indoors as the slightest breeze will send it veering off course. If you just want something for indoors or windless days then its fine but otherwise I'd look elsewhere.

Following. We went to buy one off the shelf but the ones we initially found all required a smartphone

I've played with mine outside quite a bit, and I agree, it's not designed to cope in even a relatively modest wind, but on a still day, it's pretty decent outside, camera works OK. I don't love it requiring a smartphone, but it has a take off and hover mode, which makes it decent for kids.

I have been looking for an upgrade that copes better outdoors, and has follow me and better stabilization modes, and it's own controller, but despite a dizzying array of options, never quite get there. I am definitely at the beginner end of the spectrum for navigation and don't want something that easily breaks.

Whatever you get, make sure it's not taken outta the box until 101 is understood. Particularly shielded operation and residential consenting and boundry limits.

Because you can guarantee someone will get grumpy at them thinking they 'know their rights ', or get stroppy if flown beyond them.
People will go rogue and destroy them as being 'spied on' if not forewarned of any innocent flying.
