Obviously there are a lot of books available for purchase on the Kindle but I would imagine there are a whole plethora of 'free' books out there that are now in the public domain. I was wondering whether there are any issues in accessing or using these on the Kindle and whether many people avail themselves of this option?

Yes tons of free books available, if they are already in kindle friendly format you can just download them on your PC/Mac and copy them to the Kindle via USB.

Otherwise you can use the free Kindle email service to convert from various format to a format the Kindle understands.

the exchange rate is so good at the moment as well. Think I would go for just the Wifi version, cant see a need for the 3G for me personally. Is there an advantage doing it thru Geekzone or is it a help for the site?

If you use a link here the site will get a commission but you will pay no extra- so do it if you find the forums useful (they aren't free to run :-) ) If you have WIFI at home and expect primarily to buy books at home I see no advantage in the 3G. If you want to be able to buy when out and about or travelling - and can't be bothered looking for a WIFI zone then 3G is a good deal

Get the wifi version, unless you can see yourself buy/downloading lots of books from the NZ amazon store (which has 1/4 of the books of the US version, last time I checked) over 3G

You can only use the 3G on the Kindle3 in NZ to access a) the amazon store and b) wikipedia. You can't browse other websites with it.

Thanks all pretty sure I will order one tonight when I get home - one last question and that is if there is a problem/fault where does it get returned to?

Phoenix Az - well that's where mine came from anyways- BTW their track and trace is amazing - saw it come every step of the way. Amazon is known for very good customer service - its an unusual selling point for most large US corporates

Shouldn't take too long. Just remember, when you take it out of the packaging, that's what it actually looks like. Don't try to "peel" it oof!

My kindle was shipped on Friday 3rd June....

It arrived in Auckland, on Sunday 5th June....

It arrived in Tauranga Wed 8th June...

Point being.... it took longer to get from Auckland to Tauranga than from Phoenix AZ to Auckland.

Still, shipping was remarkably quick.

ha ordered mine on the Thursday and received it Tuesday, would have been Monday but of course it was a holiday so not a bad tradeoff.
